Friends of Scottish Rugby deliver kit to entry level rugby schools

20 Jun 2019

Scottish Rugby today welcomed The Friends of Scottish Rugby to BT Murrayfield as they handed over kit and balls to several entry level schools.

Around 500 balls will be provided to the various schools with each school leader also receiving a Scottish Rugby branded t-shirt and hoodie to recognise the hard work they carry out to facilitate the game of rugby.

The Friends of Scottish Rugby’s aim is to bring people together who have an interest in supporting Scottish rugby, and its development at all levels. The organisation’s membership have contributed over £600,000 to rugby clubs in Scotland for game-changing projects.

Former Scotland internationalist Graeme Morrison, who is an ambassador for Friends of Scottish Rugby said, “Today we are launching the initiative by the Friends of Scottish Rugby to provide balls to schools in Scotland, primarily to schools who are starting their rugby journey, where there has previously been no rugby provision.

“There is a desire for the sport in some of the more challenged areas around the country and there we believe kids will really benefit from this programme. “

“Obviously in the game of rugby you need balls and I think it’s a very easy thing to do to give the gift of rugby. I was lucky enough to go to a rugby school and it wasn’t just the enjoyment of the game itself but how it holds so many tools for life for kids.”

Friends of Scottish Rugby President David Mackay who attended the launch said, “We’ve been around for a long time and I was chatting to Craig Chalmers (former Scotland), who is also one of our ambassadors, on how we take it to the next stage and he said ‘schools need rugby balls’ and if you get them engaged at the entry level you will be doing the Scottish nation a great favour.”

Leith Academy and Tynecastle School and Wester Hails Education Centre were on hand to collect their kit and receive a tour of the national stadium.

Scottish Rugby’s Glasgow South Regional Manager Jen Miller added, “This is a great partnership to give those at entry level of the game a chance to play and experience our great sport. We’re delighted to be supporting Friends of Scottish Rugby and hopefully it will help inspire our next Scotland internationalist!”
