Glasgow Warriors trio bolster Scotland 7s squad
26 Mar 2014
Scotland 7s have received a major boost ahead of this weekend’s Hong Kong 7s. The side that competed in Tokyo last weekend has been bolstered with the inclusion of three Glasgow Warriors players. Forward, James Eddie, comes in to win his seventh cap, while backs Mark Bennett and Lee Jones are also involved. The three players come in for Joseva Nayacavou, Neil Herron and Alex Glashan respectively, who will all stay on in Hong Kong as injury cover and to allow the team to prepare with an extended squad.Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: “We’re delighted to bring in Lee and Mark who have been involved on the circuit this season already and James who was one of our first Scotland 7s professionals before moving back to the XV-a-side game.In Tokyo we were disappointed, so I have selected a squad that I think can put in the performances we require this weekend. Selection was hard as everyone has trained well, but having an extended squad has been very helpful.”The Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s (3-4 May) is just round the corner and our home Commonwealth Games (26-27 July) on the horizon. This is a chance to look at potential players that will be considered for selection for those tournaments and to help us get the consistency we need to compete on the World Series.”My thanks goes to Glasgow Warriors for their support in releasing these players.”The Scots will be first up against New Zealand on Friday night (28 March, 8.20pm [Hong Kong time], 12.20pm [UK time]. Then on day two (Saturday 29 March) they’ll meet USA (11.34am [Hong Kong time] 3.34am [UK time]) and Samoa (3.14pm [Hong Kong time] 7.14am [UK time]). Scotland 7s squad to compete in the Hong Kong 7s (29-30 March): Scott Riddell, Finlay Gillies (Glasgow Warriors), Mark Robertson, Lee Jones (Glasgow Warriors), Colin Gregor, Chris Dean, Andrew Turnbull, Michael Maltman, Mark Bennett (Glasgow Warriors), Scott Wight (Glasgow Warriors), James Johnstone and James Eddie (Glasgow Warriors).
