MacRae praises Scotland 7s character after Singapore success

Fresh off the back of winning the Bowl in Singapore 7s, scottishrugby.org spoke to Scotland 7s Head Coach Calum MacRae, who believes his squad are hitting a vein of form at a crucial point in the season. READ: Round-up of Scotland’s Bowl win in SingaporeThe men in blue boasted an impressive record at the inaugural tournament in Singapore, bagging four wins and a draw, and only suffering just one defeat at the hands of an impressive South Africa.After missing out on Cup qualification with an inferior points difference to eventual tournament winners, Kenya, Scotland faced and dispensed of Canada (26-19) in the Bowl quarter-final to open day two of competition.Buoyed by their performance, they then put England to the sword (19-14), before defeating a strong USA side (14-10) to lift the Bowl competition.WATCH: Match replays from Scotland’s day two performance in SingaporeMacrae said: “The players showed how much they wanted the win in the final against the States with a really gutsy performance. They didn’t take a backward step all game.”We were disappointed to lose out on points difference on day one for the Cup qualification spot, but the boys rolled their sleeves up with three great wins on day two.”We’ve started to get the ball moving better and I think that was reflected in some of the well-worked scores over the second day.”The squad, led by captain Scott Wight, will now break before preparations for the final two tournaments in the Series, Paris and London, next month.After reaching the Bowl final in Hong Kong, the week previous to Singapore, MacRae believes that his group is growing with each round of the circuit, and paid tribute to individuals at the crux of his group.”James Johnstone was outstanding and was line breaking at will, scoring some classy tries. “Scott Wight put in a massive shift over the two weeks where we needed him.”Some of the more experienced guys like Mark Robertson are starting to hit form at an important time of year.”Scotland 7s are next in action at Paris 7s (Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 May), where they will meet Fiji, Samoa and Wales.
