Scottish Rugby is saddened to learn of the death of former Scotland internationalist and past president of the SRU, Adam Robson. He was 78. Adam was born in Hawick and educated at Hawick High School and Edinburgh College of Art. A dynamic, openside wing-forward, he played his club rugby for Dalkeith and Hawick and won the first of his 22 caps for Scotland against France in 1954. His last appearance for his country was against the same opponents in 1960. A team-mate at Hawick and Scotland, prop Hughie McLeod, said today: “Adam was very much the gentleman wing-forward – he did all the clever stuff and formed a terrific blend with the Grants, Oliver and Derrick, in the Hawick back-row.” Adam also represented the Barbarians and was a driving force in the Edinburgh Borderers club. Adam was appointed vice-president of the SRU in 1982-83 and became president in 1983-84, a momentous year for Scottish Rugby as it culminated in our first Grand Slam in 59 years. If rugby was a great passion for Adam, so, too, was art. He became a member of the Scottish Society of Artists in 1957 and his work was seen at a number of exhibitions. He taught art at Kirkcaldy High School and Dollar Academy. He arrived at Dollar in 1956 as an art teacher, was promoted to head of art in 1968 and remained in that position until he retired in 1988. Former colleagues at Dollar described him as an “amazing” man. Scottish Rugby extends its sincere sympathies to Adam’s two daughters and their families and his many friends. Adam’s funeral will take place at Dollar Parish Church on Friday 23 March at 12.45pm.
