Duns and Watsonians among BT Awards
13 May 2016
The BT Volunteer of the Month Award for March was awarded to Peter Hill of Duns for his continued contribution to improving club facilities. Having played for Duns 1st XV in the club’s inaugural season of 1959/60 and also represented both the 1st XV and 2nd XV for many seasons, Peter has utilised his skills as a former building tradesman to renovate club buildings since the 1960s. During the month of March and over the past 12 months, Peter worked tirelessly to transform what was formerly the gymnasium building at The Berwickshire High School into Duns’ new clubrooms. On receiving the award, which was presented by Duns President Eric Robertson, Peter said: “I am really shocked to have been awarded with Volunteer of the Month and it is great to be recognised for the work I have done with the club over the years.I enjoy being involved with Duns, whether that’s playing for the 1st XV many years ago or helping re-shape the buildings associated with the club.”In the late 1960s, the now honorary vice president was part of the building team who renovated what was formerly a private house in the town into premises suitable for rugby clubrooms. Now retired after a long career in the building trade, the 75-year-old has not only provided his invaluable advice, but also his time as a volunteer, spending hours working on new clubrooms to replace those which he helped create nearly half a century ago.Peter’s son Cammy plays for the club’s 1st XV as the starting hooker and Peter attends every home and away fixture with his close friend, David ‘Spud’ Thomson. March’s BT Try of the Month was awarded to Ally Davidson of Watsonians for his score in the club’s 43-17 victory over Kelso in the BT National League Division 1.
