Farndale set for 50th Scotland 7s appearance

22 Aug 2022

Scotland captain Jamie Farndale has been selected for his 50th HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series event, in Los Angeles this weekend.

Farndale will lead Scotland having made his 7s debut in 2015, finishing that season with 27 tries. He has since gone on to rack up 126 tries, sitting second on the country’s all-time try list behind Andrew Turnbull. With 630 points to his name, Farndale is one of the all-time great Scotland 7s players and comes into the Los Angeles event off the back of playing in his second Commonwealth Games.

Scotland finished sixth in Birmingham, pipped by Samoa 24-19 in a seven-try thriller at the Coventry Arena, equalling their best-ever finish at a Games.

Head coach Ciaran Beattie has made three changes from that squad with Callum Young, Finn Callaghan and Reiss Cullen replacing Alec Coombes, Jacob Henry and Grant Hughes.

Supporting Farndale as captain will be vice-captains Kaleem Barreto and Robbie Fergusson.
The squad is completed by; Ross McCann, Paddy Kelly, Femi Sofolarin, Harvey Elms, Matt Davidson, Lee Jones and Jordan Edmunds.

The Los Angeles leg, Scotland’s final event appearance following World Rugby’s mandated decision to form a Great Britain Sevens team ahead of next year’s Series, will also act as preparation for the squad ahead of the Rugby World Cup Sevens in South Africa to be played between 9 and 11 September.

Head coach Beattie said: “In our final HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series event, our squad are aiming to finish the campaign positively.

“We were determined to do something special in Birmingham and despite being disappointed not to finish fifth and record our best ever Commonwealth Games result, we walked away with our heads held high.

“The event in Los Angeles will provide extra motivation for us to do well, given that the Rugby World Cup Sevens is on the horizon. It is also a special occasion for Jamie Farndale as he reaches 50 appearances for his country – he has been an incredible player for Scotland and captained the side well throughout the season.”

Matches will be streamed live on the World Rugby YouTube channel and through the World Rugby website.
