Gavin Kerr, the 50 times capped Scotland prop, is set to join University of St Andrews in a coaching capacity for the 2015/16 season.Kerr, 38, will take on the role of forwards and defence coach for the BUCS 1A Scottish Championship winners, a position previously held by Dundee Eagles development officer Mike Stubbs.A product of Berwick and Jed-Forest clubs, he went on to gain nine years experience as a playing professional at Leeds, Edinburgh Rugby, Borders Reivers and Sale Sharks.David Ross, Director of Rugby at St Andrews University, said: “We’re delighted to have secured the services of such an experienced internationalist like Gavin.”In addition to the work he’ll do on our set-piece, he’ll also be looking to add another dimension to our game plan.”I’m sure that he will help to take our team to the next level where we will be facing some of the best university teams in the UK.”The appointment comes at a perfect time because on Saturday 26 September the world’s oldest varsity match between University of St. Andrews and Edinburgh University takes place at BT Murrayfield.Scottish Varsity MatchThe Scottish Varsity Match day will see the universities’ 1XV battle it out on the hallowed turf of the international pitch, kick-off 6pm, with their respective women’s 1XV playing at 5pm.The clubs’ 2XV and 3XV will also play on the same day on BT Murrayfield’s back-pitches.University of St Andrews are current holders of the varsity title, lifting the trophy at the Richmond Athletic Club in last year’s showdown.Tickets are currently free of charge and are available here.For more information on the Scottish Varsity Match visit Facebook or follow @ScottishVarsity on Twitter.
