GB7s Rugby Europe Review

29 Jul 2026

Great Britain Men's and Women's 7s sides competed at the second leg of the Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series in Split, Croatia over the weekend.

Both GB7s sides were in action as Europe’s top 12 nations competed for honours at the final event of the 2026 Championship Series.

The Men’s side finished sixth overall after progressing through the Pool stages unbeaten, while the Women’s side claimed eighth place after reaching the knockout stages with two wins from their three Pool matches.

In finishing in the top 10 of the overall standings, both Men’s and Women’s GB7s squads confirmed their place in the Rugby Europe Championship Series for next season.

Great Britain Men’s side made an impressive start to their weekend campaign, opening with a 19-14 victory over Spain on Friday.

They followed that with a rare 14-14 draw against Germany before rounding off the Pool stages with a convincing 29-5 win over Poland, progressing to the quarter-finals unbeaten with two wins and a draw.

A second meeting with Spain proved to be a different outcome, with GB7s falling to a 26-17 defeat in the quarter-finals. They responded with a 12-5 victory over Georgia to set up a fifth-place play-off against Portugal on Sunday.

Portugal took fifth place with a 40-0 victory, leaving GB7s to finish sixth overall. France were crowned Split 7s Men’s Championship winners after defeating Italy in the final.

Great Britain Women’s side opened with a 19-14 victory over Belgium on Friday, before falling 29-10 to Spain in their second Pool C fixture.

The side welcomed back Solana Shaw and also included Nicole Flynn and Lucia Scott from Glasgow Warriors.

A 25-10 win against Denmark secured second place and a place in the quarter-finals, where they faced Spain for a second time. Spain again proved too strong with a 27-5 victory to end their hopes of progressing to the final four.

GB7s then fell to a 26-12 defeat against Belgium in the fifth-place semi-final before concluding the tournament with a 29-22 loss to Portugal in the seventh-place play-off, finishing eighth overall.

Ireland claimed the Split 7s Women’s Championship title with victory over Poland in the final.
