GB7s set for Rugby Europe finale weekend

After the Hamburg 7s leg last weekend, Germany lead in the Men’s division, having convincingly defeated France in the final, with Italy and Belgium taking third and fourth place respectively, and GB sitting in seventh. As for the women’s, France took the win, with Poland, Belgium and Spain trailing behind and GB in 10^th.

Great Britain 7s Director of Rugby, Ciaran Beattie, said: “It is an important year in Rugby Europe to put ourselves in a position that we are still able to qualify for the Olympics and remain in that top tier of Rugby Europe.

“This tournament is also a good developmental opportunity for us to be able to select players that we believe will gain a real benefit from getting sevens exposure.

“The women’s squad finished 10^th in Hamburg so we are looking for an improved performance just to guarantee us that top spot in Rugby Europe, so we need to finish in the top 10 overall, over the aggregate of the two legs.

“We have welcomed back Solana Shaw who was excellent for us and notably we have got Nicole Flynn and Lucia Scott coming in from Glasgow Warriors as well so excited to see them play.

“For the Men’s side, we welcome back Fin Lloyd-Gilmour, who was nominated for Rookie of the Year on the World Series, and Melrose 7s winner Freddie Owsley.

“Ben Salmon is back with us and I am delighted that Charlie Shiel is also joining. Charlie has played a lot at Edinburgh Rugby and I am excited to see him on a sevens pitch and express himself.”
