Keith Macdonald

Scottish Rugby is saddened to learn of the death of former Scotland centre Keith Macdonald. He passed away peacefully last Monday (20 September) in Elie, Fife, aged 88.

Keith Roy Macdonald was born in Dundee in May 1933.

He won six caps for Scotland out of the Daniel Stewart’s College FP club in Edinburgh, making his debut in the home 12-0 victory against France in January 1956.

He had won his selection by progressing from the school inter-city in 1949 and 1950, the RAF against the Army in 1952, five Scotland trials and district rugby with Edinburgh.

He played in the subsequent championship games that season against Wales and Ireland but was forced to withdraw from the Calcutta Cup on the eve of the game through injury.

The following season he only returned to club duty in January but made such an impact that he was back in the international team for the 9-6 victory against Wales at Murrayfield one month later and retained his place in the losses to Ireland and England. He also made his Barbarians debut, sandwiched between his final two Tests, one of five Scots who played in a 24-14 victory over East Midlands at the end of February 1957.

Scottish Rugby extends its sincere condolences to all Keith Macdonald’s family and friends.
