London May Be Great For Scots!
25 Apr 2007
It’s into the pool with Kenya, Italy and New Zealand for the Scots, in the penultimate tournament on this year’s IRB Sevens World Series calendar. The London Sevens, held at Twickenham on 26/27 May, may be the last chance for Scotland’s pool partners, New Zealand, to stake their claim on the championship. Currently on 90 points, 14 below league leaders Fiji, the antipodeans have been quoted as reckoning they’ve drawn an easy pool, with opposition that should provide few problems! Will their fighting talk bring out better-than-best from Scotland, though? Just remember England versus Kenya in Adelaide! Kenya, meanwhile, are only two points behind the Scots and fielding a team inspired by that momentous victory in Australia, which led to them picking up 12 points from the event. The Africans will be out to prove that victory against the English was no one-off as Adema, Ocholla, Simiyu and teammates strive to reach the semis once again. Italy, as 2005 Rugby World Cup Sevens Bowl champions, haven’t had much of a chance to impress so far this series, with only one appearance at the Hong Kong event where they beat pool mates Kenya. They’ll be looking to end the season on a high, however – starting in London before heading to Edinburgh on 2/3 June. Aiming to build on their performances throughout this season, with the climax of the final leg on home turf, Scotland remain one of the top eight seeds in London. A target for the lower placed teams, they’ll be looking to grab a scalp of their own on the road to Murrayfield. This final leg in the 2006/07 tournament sees sevens come home to Scotland with a thrills-and-spills weekend of fast-flowing action backed by a non-stop party atmosphere.
