Ahead of the opening round of FOSROC Super6 action Bulls’ Head Coach Peter Murchie has named Ayr stalwart, Peter McCallum, as the 2019/20 captain.
McCallum is Ayr’s most decorated captain and has also led the Scotland Club XV side on numerous occasions. The dynamic number eight showcased his credentials to Murchie last season when the side won a historic league and cup double. Gregor Henry took over the reins of Ayr RFC earlier in the year when McCallum moved on to the Bulls.
McCallum is joined by another experienced Ayr player, with Blair Macpherson being named vice-captain. The pair have enjoyed the guts of a decade together, usually side-by-side in the Ayr backrow.
Speaking of what quality the pair bring, Pete Murchie said: “We have two very strong leaders. Pete has a huge amount of experience and a proven track record of success.
“Blair has stepped into the leadership role more and more and really leads by example on the pitch. They are both respected members of the group and truly deserve to be given their roles”.
McCallum has won three league titles and two Scottish Cups for Ayr – captaining the side to three of those – but doesn’t plan on slowing down at pastures new: “Ultimately we want to be the team lifting silverware come the end of the season. Ayr built up a reputation for being in amongst it every year and the Bulls will be no different. We have a lot of talent here at Millbrae and it’s an honour that Murchie is keeping faith in me to captain the side.
“Blair has been by my side every step of the journey and is the ideal guy to move into that leadership role. He is highly respected and a great character around the camp, I always look forward to getting on the field with him.
“It has been a long pre-season so I’m just excited to get on the field now and perform”.
The Bulls first action is this Sunday at Millbrae when they welcome Heriots to Millbrae (kick-off 2pm).
