North Berwick Boys go blonde for Doddie

16 Dec 2022

North Berwick RFC’s youth section have been bleaching their hair blonde to raise money for My Name’5 Doddie Foundation.

The idea started within the U18 squad and has now been picked up by the younger ages, including the U16s who showed off their new hairdos at the recent Scottish Schools U16 Cup Final at BT Murrayfield.

So far, over £7,500 has been raised for the Foundation.

North Berwick RFC’s Director of Rugby Ken Muir said: “The U18s were sat in the clubhouse after they’d just lost their Schools Shield semi-final, wondering what they were going to do with the rest of their season.

“They decided on raising money for Doddie’s charity and once they did it, it started to spread within the club.

“There’s now over 100 of them who are blonde! We’re delighted with it, it shows good charitable thoughts and it’s also a great teambuilding thing.

“It’s just really heartwarming that the boys are doing this off their own back, to know that they love rugby enough to spread it beyond just playing the game.”

Fullback Oliver Bonnington said: “The boys decided they wanted to fundraise for MN5D because it seemed right to bring attention to the charity after Doddie’s passing with all he did for the rugby community and wider on the disease.

“We wanted to bleach our hair blonde for part of Doddie’s tartan being yellow and it was something we could get everyone on board with.

“It feels brilliant to have had such a good response to the fundraiser as we’ve now had the U16s jump on the idea as well. It’s also just about keeping on growing what Doddie built when he was still with us as it is such a great cause.

“I would like to say many thanks to all those who have donated, it’s great to see so many people donating from all connections to North Berwick Rugby.”
