Preview: Uruguay v Scotland

26 Jul 2024

The Skyscanner Americas Tour comes to an end tomorrow as Scotland face Uruguay at Estadio Charrúa, Montevideo (kick off 8pm BST) - live on TNT Sports 2, BBC Scotland and iPlayer.

What they said

Head Coach Gregor Townsend said: “Uruguay have played three Test matches in the last few weeks. I think they’ll be fired up after their defeat last week to Argentina.

“We just want to make sure that we improve again. We’ve been really pleased with a lot of aspects, and pleased with the fitness and sharpness of our players. This is one more opportunity to put that in place.”

Huw Jones, who will reach 50 caps for Scotland this weekend, said: “It means the world to me. It’s been a long struggle to get to this point, but I’m super proud to reach this milestone.

“Playing international rugby is a dream come true and to do it 50 times for my country is a huge honour.”

The previous meeting

The only prior encounter between Uruguay and Scotland came during the 1999 Rugby World Cup, when Scotland were 43-12 winners at Murrayfield.

The teams

The stats

  • Gregor Townsend will take charge of his 83rd Test match as Scotland Head Coach, the joint most by any British Head Coach, moving level with Sir Clive Woodward; in fact, only Warren Gatland, Graham Henry, Steve Hansen and Bernard Laporte have overseen more games in charge of a single Tier 1 nation.
  • Jamie Dobie has scored three tries during the summer tour, the joint most of any Scotland player, alongside Dylan Richardson and Ewan Ashman, while he’s also assisted a further three tries – more than any of his teammates.
  • Scotland haven’t conceded a single line break in each of their last two games (v USA and Chile), previously the last time they’d stopped a team from breaking their line was in the opening round of the 2021 Six Nations against England.
