Rugby World Cup 2021 Round-up

25 Oct 2022

Scotland Women competed in their first Rugby World Cup in 12 years this October in New Zealand. From new friends to near misses, here’s a round-up of the stand-out moments from their campaign.

Getting started

The Scotland team experienced an incredible opening ceremony with the best of the best in women’s rugby.

Meeting the Prime Minister

Some of the team got the pleasure of chatting to Jacinda Ardern, prime minister of New Zealand.

A wet warmup

Despite the weather, preparations heated up in this muddy hit out against South Africa.

The opening game in Whangārei

The team gave their all to their first match of the tournament, but the nervy, nail-biting game against Wales ended in a heart-breaking 3-point loss.

Training talk

Competition, tanning weather and forwards in full flight: find out what the Scotland pack talk about at training, with Rachel McLachlan and Emma Wassell mic’d up.

Australian agony

The team put in a fantastic performance against an Australian side who had given the Black Ferns a fright the previous week. This game ended even closer than Scotland against Wales, with just two points separating the sides. Watch the highlights here.

Cultural exchanges

Despite disappointing results, the team gained incredible experiences in New Zealand. Taking part in this Māori ceremony highlights what international rugby is all about.

The last pool game

After two games within a score for the Scotland team, the strong Black Ferns side, who went on to win the tournament, gained a convincing victory at home. Watch post-match reactions from captain Rachel Malcolm, head coach Bryan Easson and winger Rhona Lloyd.

A taste of Scotland

Thanks to Northland Caledonian Pipe Band for hosting our Scottish Rugby House, a home away from home, for family and friends on match days.

Hear from the players

After a rollercoaster year winning qualification in dramatic fashion, the players’ hard work to make it to the World Cup, as well as their great efforts while out there, should be applauded. Captain Rachel Malcolm and prop Leah Bartlett took to Instagram to explain how much the journey has meant to them so far.

Thank you!

We’d like to extend a massive thank you to all the fans, family and friends who supported the team from home and in New Zealand, As One. The future is bright for this Scotland women’s team.
