Sarah Beaney Cup – Away win for Cup holders Watsonians

The holders travelled up to Cupar from the capital early in the day for the 10am kick-off and they managed to hit their stride early on to negate the challenge from the plucky hosts.

King was on form crossing three times in Fife while the other try scorers for Freddie Main’s side were Lucy Winter (2), Bryony Nelson (2), Shannon Macey (2), Hannah Davisson, Alison Orr, captain Isla Craigie, Carly Lauder and Anna Forsyth.

Conversions were added by Claire Bain (3) and Craigie.

The result means that Watsonians are top of Pool A with three wins from three to date.

Howe’s points in this match came through a try from Stephanie Craig converted by Phoebe Saunders and they are fifth in the pool.

There are due to be three matches this coming Sunday to bring the pool stages to a close and after that the draw for the knock-out stages will be made.

​Women’s National Plate 

In the National Plate, the Shetland versus Greenock Wanderers match and Kelso’s trip to Oban Lorne fell foul of the weather, but Broughton and Inverness Craig Dunain managed to play.

And it was a cracking tie on Saturday, home side Broughton eventually coming out on top 34-26 having been pushed all the way by their visitors.

Lauren Park’s five points and Jess Kelleher’s try and conversion put Broughton into a lead in the first half.

Lorna Murdoch also went over for the home side at Wardie before the interval, but Inverness Craig Dunain were not to be shaken off easily and were just 17-14 down after 40 minutes.

Dani Downs and Kelleher scored the next tries for Broughton, but a quickfire double from the visitors set up an exciting finale.

Louise Dalgliesh scored late on to win it for Broughton – the first time they have had four wins in a row since October 2017 – and they are top of Pool A with Inverness Craig Dunain second.

Women’s National Bowl

Four games were played in the National Bowl on Sunday.

Chiara D’Ostuni, Alison Shepherd, Shauna Berry, Sarah Kearley and Katie Watson (3) all scored tries while Merce Just kicked two conversions as Lismore made it two wins from two with a 39-10 home win over Strathmore to sit on top of Pool B.

Aberdeenshire Quines have two wins from three to sit second in Pool A after a 55-17 away triumph against a Midlands Development outfit while Biggar are top of Pool C.

The Hartreemill side, whose men’s first XV lifted the Tennent’s National League Division One trophy on Saturday, defeated Livingston 60-5 and, in Pool D, Bishopton saw off Ardrossan Accies 34-10 on the road.

Grangemouth Stags were awarded a 28-0 victory over Peterhead with two other matches postponed over the weekend.

All three competitions continue this coming weekend.
