Sarah Beaney Cup – Round 1 Review

27 Jan 2020

There was a busy weekend of women’s rugby as the Sarah Beaney Cup round 1 took place.

In the women’s Sarah Beaney Cup first group matches on Sunday there were three away wins and one home triumph.

Last year’s runners-up Hillhead/Jordanhill were on the road to Stewartry and managed to head back to Glasgow with a hard fought 26-0 win under their belts.

Lis Lawson of Cartha Queens Park was one of the stars of the weekend, her four tries helping Cartha Queens Park to win 38-13 at Howe of Fife in Cupar, the winger being named player of the match. Caitlan Bell and Maddie Lowe, on debut, also scored for the victors.

Corstorphine Cougars showed that they could be a force to be reckoned with in this year’s event as they went to Goldenacre and defeated Edinburgh rivals Heriot’s Blues 41-17.

And across the capital at Myreside, holders Watsonians were defeating Garioch 33-7.

Garioch made the long trip south and put in a great shift, being just 14-7 down to the Tennent’s Premiership champions at half-time before they edged away from them.

Charlotte Runcie, Alison Orr (2), Emily Cotterill and captain Rachel Bragg scored the ‘Sonians tries with Nicola Nightingale converting four of them.

Broughton went to Greenock Wanderers in the women’s National Plate and managed to secure a 10-5 win at Fort Matilda.

Hannah Mutton bagged a try for the home side, but the Edinburgh side scored two tries of their own though to come back from 5-0 down.

Laura Kinghorn levelled things up before Louise Dalgliesh’s perfectly weighted kick set-up Jennifer Reid for the winner.

Inverness Craig Dunain secured a home win over Glasgow University 24-19 with Kelso coming out on top 22-5 at Kelso.

Allana McWilliam (2), Jane Stewart, Nadine Barnes and Kayleigh Warrick all scored tries as Annan defeated West of Scotland 33-15 at Violetbank.
