Sarah Beaney Cup – Round 2 Review

The Sirens from Stewartry travelled to Edinburgh to take on Heriot’s Blues at Goldenacre and it was a hearty affair. It was the visitors who managed to carve out just enough chances to get the victory in Pool B, Ali Henderson scoring a try and Lisa Ritchie a penalty in an 8-3 triumph. Heriot’s took a losing bonus point from the contest, Ellie Wilson kicking a penalty.

County had Scotland Six Nations extended squad member Rachel Shankland back available for their Pool A trip to Cartha Queens Park. And the skipper made the difference, scoring two unconverted tries as the Bridgehaugh outfit won 10-7 at GHA’s Braidholm ground. Cartha made sure of a losing bonus point thanks to a try by Rebecca Mains converted by Sirri Topping.

The matches between Garioch and Howe of Fife and Ayr and Hillhead/Jordanhill were postponed due to poor weather. The weather also saw the Broughton-Inverness Craig Dunain match off in the National Plate, but two clashes did survive on Sunday.

Kelso have two wins from two in Pool B after they just got the better of Annan 19-17. Emma Bree led the way with two tries for Kelso with Leigh-Anne Stewart also going over and Katie McLaren kicking two conversions.

Annan took a losing bonus point back to Violetbank after all their efforts, Jane Stewart with a try double and Kirsty Barlow going over too. Mally McGeoch kicked one conversion. In the same pool, West of Scotland were on form to get the better of Oban Lorne 31-15, meaning the Burnbrae side now have one win and one loss to their name in the competition to date.

Stornoway played some great rugby on Saturday to defeat Ardrossan Accies 37-0 in the National Bowl. In the Pool D match Georgia Amor led the way with a hat-trick of tries for the home side. Olivia Woodley, Mairi Crate (2) and Courtney Gilles also got in on the try scoring act to secure a four try bonus point with Annis Anderson kicking a conversion.

In Pool A, Orkney Dragons edged out Aberdeenshire Quines 27-22. The hosts took five points from this one while Gemma Adam, Justine Hanlon, Susanna Pennala and Mhairi MacPhail scored tries for the defeated visitors with one conversion coming from Michelle Aitken.

On Sunday, three matches were postponed and Midlands Development were handed a 28-0 win in Pool A as Huntly could not raise a full squad.

In Pool C, Livingston went to Wigtownshire and won 14-10. Lucy Kidd and Ayesha Saeed scored tries and both were converted by Chelsea Watt for the victors. Tries from Rachel Kilday and Jenny Farroll helped the home side earn a losing bonus point.

In Pool D, Hamilton won 46-0 at Bishopton. Carey Pegrum (3), Siobhan Spiers (2), Olivia Quinn, Lorraine Snaddon and Louise Houston scored their tries while Snaddon kicked three conversions as they took five points back to Laigh Bent.

The action in all three competitions now takes a break for a week for everyone to enjoy the Calcutta Cup weekend.
