Sarah Beany Cup – Pool stages continue

21 Feb 2020

Tennent’s Premiership rivals Watsonians and Stirling County are set to renew acquaintances as the Sarah Beaney Cup pool stages continue this weekend.

Over the last few years the two clubs have had some good battles and the next meeting will be in Pool A of the Cup this Sunday.

With the poor weather still doing the rounds in Scotland and both teams eager for game time the match has been moved to Clydebank.

“The squad are desperate to get some rugby played having only had one outing since December 15,” Watsonians head coach Freddie Main, whose side have so far beaten Garioch in their one match in the competition so far, said.

“The weather hasn’t dampened spirits and we are delighted to have secured a 3G pitch in Clydebank to ensure the game happens.

“We are grateful to Stirling for going along with the new plan and expect a tough game from a strong team who play positive rugby.”

County’s home match with Garioch last week was postponed meaning they too have one win from one – coming against Cartha Queens Park on February 2 – heading into this one.

Garioch have five points from two games and Cartha have six points from two games and they are set to clash at Kellands Park.

“The squad have been preparing hard for our clash against Cartha,” Garioch skipper Jess Silcocks said.

“After a strong Cup start with a win over Howe Harlequins following a great performance against Watsonians, we really want to go out and play our best rugby and show what we can do against the best teams in Scotland this Sunday.”

There is an intriguing clash in Pool B where Hillhead/Jordanhill and Corstorphine – both with two wins from two – are set to meet.

Hills scored 40 points last weekend against Heriot’s Blues while the Cougars ran in 103 points against Ayr so defences will need to be on red alert on Sunday.

When the two sides clashed in December in the Premiership play-offs semi-final Hills just edged it 25-21 so this should be a hard fought contest.

The fourth and final Cup match scheduled for Sunday is Stewartry against Ayr.

Stewartry have one win from two in Pool B to date while Ayr will want to bounce back from their heavy defeat at the hands of Corstorphine last time out.

In the National Plate, Broughton will look to remain unbeaten when they host Shetland in Pool A on Saturday.

On Sunday, Glasgow University will play Greenock Wanderers in the same pool while there are two ties in Pool B.

Kirkcaldy host Oban Lorne with West of Scotland on the road to Kelso with all sides looking to put the pressure on inactive leaders Annan.

In the National Bowl there are five matches scheduled for Sunday with Lismore and Grangemouth Stags among the ties as they look to get their respective Pool B campaigns underway.
