Scotland win three in a row at Vancouver 7s

Ciaran Beattie’s charges recovered from a difficult first day, during which they lost to Australia and USA, and drew with Samoa, to win all three of their Sunday ties including a notable win over fourth-ranked France.

Other victories came against Kenya and eighth-ranked Argentina as Scotland finished their North American double-header on a high following last weekend’s tournament in Los Angeles.

That aforementioned match against the French – played hours after Scotland beat the same opponents in the Guinness Six Nations at BT Murrayfield – showed onlookers exactly what the young Scots are capable of in the most physically demanding of environments.

The impressive Kyle Rowe and Jamie Farndale grabbed tries in a 12-7 success which left the Scots in ninth place for the event, having won a section containing the three sides they defeated as well as Ireland and Samoa.

Head Coach Beattie said: “I’m delighted with the resilience and attitude we showed here on day two to finish with three consecutive wins against some very good opposition.

“The medics have done a great job and the players have been diligent with their rest and rehab after a demanding event in Los Angeles where we picked up a few knocks.

“We were disappointed to lose the first two in Vancouver but we then drew against a very good Samoa team and that spurred us on to beat Argentina for the first time in I don’t know how long.

“We then stood up to the task against a very physical Kenyan side before beating the fourth best side in the world – it was a very positive way to end the tournament, especially because we had to close out those games with time on the clock.

“The boys should be proud of the way they stuck to their task as a squad and I feel we really showed on day two here in Canada what we’re capable of going forward.”

The circuit now breaks until legs in London (23/24 May) and Paris (30/31 May) because of the postponement of events in Hong Kong and Singapore as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.
