Scots delight as all-star Baa Baas defeat Wales

Harris – who announced her retirement from international duty earlier this year – and Sergeant were among the star-studded select, which boasted six Rugby World Cup players, two winners and over 430 international caps.

That experience and quality was telling in a fizzing first-half in which the Baa Baas scored five tries to lead 29-0 at the interval, with Heriot’s Harris dotting down for the fourth at the corner after New Zealand stand-off-half Ruahwei Demant unlocked the defence and put her through.

Wales fought back with 15 unanswered points after the interval but it was too little too late, as the women in the famous black-and-white jerseys and assorted socks triumphed.

Harris said: “I feel so very privileged to have been invited to play with the Barbarians.

“I loved the whole experience – playing alongside world class players, being coached and managed by legends of the game, making lifelong friends and having loads of fun along the way.

“It [playing for the Barbarians] was something I would never have dreamt possible. It was incredible. I feel very honoured to have played my last game of rugby on an amazing stage with such a special team.

“To score a try at Principality Stadium just topped it off. I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity and hope many future Scotland players get to experience it.”

Players from Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, USA, Wales and Scotland were gathered for the contest in Cardiff – that formed a double header with a corresponding men’s match – with fellow back Annabel Sergeant doubling the Scots contingent in black and white with an appearance off the bench, as Scottish referee Hollie Davidson officiated over the proceedings.

Sergeant said: “I had the most incredible week with an amazing group of people. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to play for the Barbarians and for the memories and friendships we have made. It’s a week I’ll never forget.”
