Scottish Rugby announced today that Sir Moir Lockhead OBE has been appointed as the next Chairman. Sir Moir was appointed to the role of Chairman following an extensive recruitment process led by the Scottish Rugby President and former Scotland captain and British Lions prop Ian McLauchlan.He will succeed current Scottish Rugby Chairman Allan Munro, who will be retiring as Chairman after six years in the post at the union’s AGM on Saturday 25 June 2011. Sir Moir, a rugby enthusiast, who has regularly attended fixtures at Murrayfield, commented:”It is a great honour to be appointed as the next Chairman of Scottish Rugby.”Scottish Rugby is in great shape both on and off the park with the national team currently ranked 7th in the world and the sport growing at grassroots levels throughout the country. I’ll be taking on the role of Chairman later this year, with great relish. “It is undoubtedly an exciting time to be joining Scottish Rugby and to assist in taking forward the fine work established by Chairman Allan Munro and his board.”I am very much looking forward to spending time with Allan and the board in the run up to my appointment at the Scottish Rugby  AGM on the 25th of June.”Scottish Rugby President Ian McLauchlan welcomed the appointment. He said: “I am delighted that we have been able to appoint Sir Moir as our next Chairman.”Having met and spoken to Sir Moir in recent weeks, I have been struck by his passion for Scottish Rugby and his desire to build on the strong foundations and achievements overseen by Allan Munro. Sir Moir brings a wealth of business experience which I have no doubt will prove invaluable in the years ahead.”Allan Munro, the current Chairman, said: “It has been a real privilege to be the Chairman of Scottish Rugby, to work with so many talented and committed people and to have played my part overseeing significant success both on and off the field of play.”I will be working closely with Sir Moir in the coming months to ensure a seamless transition following his appointment at our AGM.”During his career Sir Moir was Chief Executive and Deputy Chairman of FirstGroup plc, the leading transport operator in the UK and North America. Originally a mechanical engineer, he left school at 15 to become apprentice mechanic, joined Grampian Regional Transport in 1985 as General Manager and went on to lead the successful employee buy-out and subsequent listing of the business on the London Stock Exchange. Under his leadership the business grew from 500 employees and£15m of revenues in 1989 to become one of the world’s leading transport operators with revenues of over£6bn and more than 130,000 employees.  Sir Moir is married with four children and lives on his family’s farm near Aberdeen.  He was awarded a knighthood for services to transport in 2008 and awarded an OBE in 1996.
