Squads announced ahead of FOSROC Super6 opener

7 Nov 2019

The Boroughmuir Bears and Stirling County have announced their match day squads ahead of the first ever FOSROC Super6 fixture on Friday evening.

Over 1,000 tickets have been purchased for the curtain-raiser at Meggetland, which kicks off under the lights at 7.30pm.

Since their appointments, the Head Coaches have had the task of assembling their squad of players for the maiden FOSROC Super6 competition.

In the Stirling squad, Rayner Kennedy leads the team after recovering from surgery which kept him out of the majority of last season.

Also selected are Charlie Brown, Ollie Bartlett, Dean Taylor-Menzies, Connor Gordon, Caleb Korteweg, Josh Henderson and Landon Hayes, who are all in line to make their competitive debut for the club.

Both squads include players from Edinburgh and Glasgow Warriors, these selections have been made through consultation between the FOSROC Super6 and pro team coaches.

Ahead of the tournament opener, Stirling County Head Coach Ben Cairns said: “Having picked up a few injuries through pre-season a number of players have returned to the fold just in time to put their hand up for selection for the first ever FOSROC Super6 match. This has meant competition for places and some difficult decisions.

“It’s great to have three Warriors, who have played for the club in the past, released to play and we are sure they will come in and improve our squad.

“We are happy with the options we have across the 23 and will finalise our starting team after our last training session on Thursday evening.”

Boroughmuir Bears Head Coach Graham Sheil said: “Boroughmuir Bears are excited to be entering a new competition and equally so to be opening the competition at home at Meggetland Stadium.

“The club has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to generate a great event and encourage as many people as possible to get along and support the Boroughmuir Bears, so we are looking forward to a very different feel around Meggetland tomorrow evening to welcome Stirling County.”

Sean Lineen, Head of Academies and on-field lead for FOSROC Super6 said: “We are looking forward to an exciting weekend of rugby and for the new FOSROC Super6 competition to now begin.

When asked on the pro players being involved in the competition he added: “Having pro players involved helps to bridge the gap between the professional game, adds value and raises standards, which is the overall tournament objective.

“Glasgow Warriors are aligned with Stirling County, Ayrshire Bulls and Boroughmuir Bears and Edinburgh is aligned with Watsonians Rugby, Heriot’s Rugby and the Southern Knights in terms of player release and this is generating regular dialogue between clubs, and importantly coaches, and will give players valuable game time, when needed.”
