Women’s Premiership Preview | Round 7 Reschedule

3 Nov 2023

This weekend we have two rescheduled games taking place following on from problem caused by Storm Babet in October. Corstorphine Cougars, Stewartry Sirens, Watsonian FC and Stirling County all have a bye.

Cartha Queens Park v Garioch – Dumbreck, KO 2pm

Last weekend both Cartha and Garioch suffered defeat at the hands of Watsonians and Heriot’s Blues and will be eyeing up this weekend as an opportunity to get back on track.

A win for Garioch this weekend could go a long way to taking them out last place and away from the play-offs which will take place in early 2023 to determine promotion and relegation between the Premiership and the Regional Division 1 leagues.

Reflecting on last week’s performance, Garioch captain Sammy Ross said: “Our away trip to Heriot’s saw a few curveballs thrown our way but after a couple of postponed games we were all determined to get some rugby played.

“We got though as the first quarter of the game 0-0 and it took 23 minutes for Heriot’s to get one past us. Ultimately, Heriot’s got the better of us, but they did leave us with a fantastic game!

“I’m extremely proud of the resilience being shown by the squad and our work-ons are starting to show, but we need to be able to put in an 80-minute performance.”

Looking ahead to this weekend, Sammy added: “We hope the weather stays on our side to get us to Glasgow. We know how tough Cartha can be and that we are up for another tough shift but determined to give it our all!”

Heriot’s Blues v Hillhead Jordanhill – Goldenacre, KO 2pm

Just one point separates Heriot’s Blues and Hillhead Jordanhill from fourth and fifth place ranking, so this weekend could be crucial in deciding who gets ahead.

Last weekend the Blues triumphed over Garioch with an 11 try spectacle, whilst Hills trip to Bridgehaugh ended in defeat 41-17 in favour of hosts, Stirling County.

Looking ahead to this weekend’s fixture, Blues’ co-captain Annabel Sergeant said: “We’re excited to face Hillhead this week, after back-to-back wins. This is a huge game for us as there is only one point separating both teams in the league.

“We know they have some strong ball carriers, so we need to step our defence up to another level. This will be a big battle and we will need to front up for the whole 80 minutes to come out on top!”

Hillhead’s Hannah Telling is just as excited to face the Blues, adding: “After being postponed by some peak Scottish weather, we’re really excited to finally play Heriots for the first time this season. Saturday promises to be a cracker of a game in Edinburgh. Can’t wait!”
