Scotland 7s secure HSBC Sevens World Series core status
Scotland 7s have secured their core status in the HSBC Sevens World Series, after a valiant day two in London.The Scots saw off their opponents, Tonga and Russia, with everything at stake in both matches and managed to keep a clean sheet with the scores ending 31-0 and 19-0 respectively.The Scots will join Spain, who also won their semi-final against Portugal 10-5, in next year’s circuit and wait to see who the 15th core team will be. Losing semi-finalists Portugal and Russia, play in a third placed play-off at 5.24pm.Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: I think relief is the key word today, credit to the players they have fronted up today. I really think our defence was key.We have a few battered and brusied bodies, but the players deserve every bit of credit. They have showed what it means to be a Scotland 7s player and they have showed what a place in the World Series means.We need to the earn the right to be part of the World Series every tournament we play in from now and moving forward.Scotland 7s captain, Colin Gregor, said: “We have got to move on from here and make sure we give a good reflection of ourselves in the World Cup next month and on the circuit next year. “We have scraped through by the skin of our teeth but we have another chance. The two teams will not play a final.
