Scotland 7s to face USA in Gold Coast 7s Bowl quarter-finals

Scotland 7s will face the USA at 1.30am (UK time) in tomorrow’s Bowl quarter-finals on the Gold Coast in Australia.Despite tying with the home-side Australia in their first match of day one, 21-21, they were unable to find victory against Samoa, 12-19 and Argentina, 19-21.It was a frustrating day for the abbreviated national team as they showed some good passages of play in each match, with clever attacking and a good shape in defence.Head coach, Stephen Gemmell, said: “We have gone toe-to-toe with three quality teams today and pushed them very close and played some good rugby, but the bottom line is we finished bottom of our pool and ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard every time.”We made too many individual errors at key moments and lacked belief and confidence in our game. We did show great character against Australia to come back, but you can’t give teams any lead at this level.”We are where we are now so we have to regroup for tomorrow and deliver consistent performances.”In the first match, the Scots trailed 21-0 at the end of the first period, but scores from Mark Robertson, Scott Riddell and James Fleming, plus two conversions from Robertson and a third from Alex Glashan (pictured) in the second-half saw them tie the match.Against Samoa, who seem to have returned to the world class outfit they once were, Michael Fedo scored a brace of tries, with one converted by Glashan. However, tries from Misioka Timoteo, Faalemiga Selesele and Sani Niue proved too much for the Scots. Finally against Argentina, it was a nail-biting match from the outset and Gregor Young almost had a fairytale start to his HSBC Sevens World Series career when he almost scored a winning try, however Argentina stopped him an inch from the line and cleared the ball on the hooter. The scorers in this match were Struan Dewar, who played well today, showing his defensive strength and attacking power, Fleming and James Johnstone. Glashan and Turnbull struck one conversion each.Gold Coast 7s day oneScotland 21-21 AustraliaTries: Mark Robertson, Scott Riddell and James FlemingConversions: Mark Robertson (2) and Alex GlashanStarting team: Scott Riddell, Michael Fedo, Struan Dewar, Alex Glashan, Andrew Turnbull, John Houston and James Johntone.Subs: Mark Robertson (7 mins), James Fleming (10mins), Joseva Nayacavou (11mins), Gregor Young (13mins) and Michael Maltman (not used).Scotland 12-19 SamoaTries: Michael Fedo (2)Conversions: Alex GlashanStarting team: Scott Riddell, Michael Fedo, Struan Dewar, Alex Glashan, Mark Robertson, John Houston and James Johntone.Subs: James Fleming (9mins), Michael Maltman, Andrew Turnbull, Joeseva Nayacavou (12mins) and Gregor Young (13mins).Scotland 19-21 ArgentinaTries: Struan Dewar, James Fleming and James JohnstoneConversions: Alex Glashan and Andrew TurnbullStarting team: Scott Riddell, Michael Fedo, Struan Dewar, Alex Glashan, Mark Robertson, Andrew Turnbull and John Houston.Subs: Joseva Nayacavou (2mins), James Fleming (7mins), Gregor Young (9mins), James Johnstone (11mins) and Michael Maltman (not used).Ends
