Scotland A Women’s (SWA) preparation for their home encounter against France this Saturday (Lasswade, kick-off 6pm) got underway with a 10-7 win over the British Army at the same ground. Neither side could register a score in the first-half of the closely fought encounter before SWA crossed the line seven minutes after the break. Good link play between centres Laura Steven and Annabel Sergeant saw the ball shipped wide to Katy Green on the wing to score out wide, though stand-off Nicola Halfpenny could not add the extras, 5-0. Minutes later the side’s lead was threatened when flanker, Natalya Macholla, was sin-binned for an illegal tackle however, credit to the hosts, they kept the army at bay, despite the disadvantage. A short while after Macholla returned SWA doubled their tally with a fine try from winger Lynsey Douglas. After winning their scrum in the centre of the field, SWA executed a series of offloads before Hillhead / Jordanhill’s Stephanie Johnston broke through midfield and put in Douglas for the unconverted score at the corner, 10-0. With just five minutes to go the British Army finally got the score their efforts had merited when some forward interplay saw them crash over for the converted try.
