Scotland Women announce squad for Rugby Europe Grand Prix
Scotland Women 7s have picked a consistent squad to challenge in the opening Rugby Europe Grand Prix tournament this weekend (Friday 29 and Saturday 30 June) in Marcoussis, Paris.
Eleven of the squad played in Scotland Women 7s’ recent win at the Amsterdam 7s – where they won eight out of eight games and scored 26 tries.
Included are three players who took part when Scotland were last in the Grand Prix Series in 2015 – Lisa Martin, Jenny Maxwell and Eilidh Sinclair.
Scotland Women XVs internationalist, Helen Nelson, captains the side.
Scotland Women U18 7s player, Evie Gallagher, retains her place in the squad after scoring in Amsterdam.
Scotland Women 7s Head Coach, Scott Forrest, said: “Our preparations have gone well over the last month and winning in Amsterdam was reward for our consistent performances during the tournament.
“The squad are looking forward to Marcoussis and understand that this will be another step up in competition.”
Scotland won promotion back into the Grand Prix series with unbeaten victories in the Czech Republic and Hungary in the Rugby Europe Trophy in 2017.
The squad’s group in Marcoussis includes Ireland (12.44pm), Wales (3.51pm) and Poland (6.35pm), who they’ll face on the first day of competition, with the likes of France, England and Russia awaiting on the second day of the tournament depending on results.
Forrest added: “It’s great to be able to select a consistent squad as we target another set of strong performances against high-quality opposition.
It’s been pleasing to see the team develop over the last two months and to see younger players like Evie Gallagher coming through the age-grade system and compete alongside more experienced players. It’s great for the squad as a whole.”
Following the tournament in Paris the squad will travel to Kazan, Russia on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 September to complete the Grand Prix Series.
