Scotland 32 – 5 Sweden Scotland trounced their third pool opponents this afternoon, at the Rugby World Cup in Surrey, to keep their target of 5th to 8th place in sight at the final whistle. Five tries ensured the Scots also secured the bonus point. They had to wait for the outcome of the day’s other games to find out that their play-off opponents for Wednesday’s fifth place semi final would be Canada – their opponents in the first pool game, who were defeated by France.  Delighted captain, Lynne Reid, underlined the spirit the girls had shown from the whistle, In that game we came out firing. It made a difference but we continued to play our style of rugby – what really made the difference was the execution of final skills. It was a tough match – the legs are feeling it now – but it’s time to regroup and prepare for our next game. Photos from the game can be found on the gallery on the Scotland Women web site.     pic: Donna Kennedy heads for the line Lynne Reid talks about the match with Sweden.  Following two defeats, despite having the majority of ball in the opening two pool games, Scotland Women came out with all guns blazing as they ran on to pitch two at Surrey Sports Park, opening match day three against Sweden. Early pressure and promising phases of attack from the Scots were soon dampened as the Swedes tried to slow the ball. A great break from stand-off Erin Kerr sparked groans from the packed stand as the pass to centre Lucy Millard missed its mark. Continued pressure, however, led to the first score of the day, as Donna Kennedy stretched across the whitewash to put five points on the board, the conversion from Nicola Halfpenny just swinging wide. A burst in reply, from the Swedes, saw them penalised for not pulling away and the advantage return to the Scots who followed up a great lineout steal with a soaring kick to touch, to bring them within five metres of the Swedish line. Another great run of play followed with Halfpenny’s kick secured and run along the line, passed wide to Millard who dotted down just wide of the post for the second try, converted by Halfpenny to put Scotland ahead 12-0 after 14 minutes. Some great work from the Scots saw the pressure and drive maintained, a great pick-and-go from Kennedy, leading to the 113-capper crossing the line for Scotland’s third try, the conversion just pulled wide as the threatening crosswind picked up. Ten minutes before the break, Sweden pressed ahead but the threat evaporated as they again slowed down the ball and gave away a penalty, booted beautifully between the uprights by Halfpenny to make it 20-0. As the final minutes ticked away, great defence from the Scots saw off the Swedish pressure as they attacked the line time and again. It was Swedes who ran out in attacking form as the second half kicked off, making a well-angled break for the line which was only stopped by some frantic but spot-on tackling from the Scots. Regrouping, the dark blues then put together a superb run of play with pick-and-goes seeing them work their way back up the field to the increasing frustration of the Swedes. A tackle from Kerr, a great run from Stephanie Johnston and a spectacular break from Katy Green saw the latter cross the line for fourth and bonus point Scottish try, the conversion going wide. Leading into the last twenty minutes, Scotland’s tackling hit the mark time and again, allowing Millard to race through the gap and down the line to dot down between the posts for her second and Scotland’s fifth try, Halfpenny booting the ball across the bar to make it 32-0. With fresh legs introduced by both sides over the closing period, the advantage switched accordingly. Sweden piled on the pressure and the action moved into Scotland’s half, leading to a try-saving tackle from Kennedy. The Swedes determination led to a final burst which saw their centre, Norberg, clear the zero and make it 32-5, the final score.
