Scots trio help to secure GB 7s spot for Paris 2024

GB 7s Women’s side have secured their place at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games after a triumphant display at the Kraków-Małopolska 2023 European Games.

Scotland internationalists Shona Campbell, Rhona Lloyd and Lisa Thomson all played an integral part across the three days, with the trio featuring in the gold medal match against Poland.

The women enjoyed a promising start to their qualification campaign, after securing comprehensive wins against Pool A opponents, Norway (55-0), Italy (36-5) and Czechia (37-5).

The momentum was carried into the later stages, as the side put in a solid performance against Germany in the quarter-finals to record a 53-0 victory, with Thomson and Lloyd both adding points to the board.

Next up was Belgium in the semi-final, which was delayed by an hour due to an issue with the posts. The side remained unphased by the break in play and eventually went on to claim a comfortable 36-12 win against the Belgians, with Campbell dotting down twice.

The side were crowned champions after defeating Poland 33-0 in the final, with Lloyd cruising over the whitewash in the second-half to keep the scoreboard ticking.

GB Women will now join Australia, Brazil, France, Ireland, New Zealand and United States at next year’s showpiece event, which will be held at Stade de France in Paris, with the final spot to be determined at a repechage tournament.

The GB Men’s squad lost out to Ireland in their own qualification encounter, losing 26-12 in the final of the Men’s 2023 European Games’ 7s competition. They remain in the mix for Paris 2024, however, with a repechage competition scheduled for June 2024, where one final Olympic berth will be allocated to the winner of that event.
