With rugby in Scotland, and globally, facing unparalleled financial challenges Scottish Rugby has developed a tiered group of a supporter membership for the coming season, with the ambition of ‘virtually’ filling BT Murrayfield with fans over the coming weeks in terms of the membership tiers purchased.
Fans have an opportunity to ‘Sign Up for Scotland’ and support the game and Scotland to a level which suits them. The membership offer has replaced all previous ticketing and international match ticket packages for the 2020/21 season including Scotland Season Pass, Autumn Test Package and Scotland Supporters Membership. These were withdrawn as a result of the uncertainty around large crowds, and in line with physical distancing guidelines.
Scottish Rugby remains hopeful of welcoming limited numbers of fans to the seven scheduled international tests at BT Murrayfield this autumn and the 2021 Guinness Six Nations.
So it is asking fans to sign up for the new membership to not only receive some great fan benefits but also to ask supporters to put themselves forward for access to whatever limited ticket numbers might be possible at BT Murrayfield, which will be managed through a ballot scheme.
The game’s effective closure over the last six months continues to impact our everyday decision-making and planning for the resumption of grassroots rugby and live matches. While we continue to be reliant on public health guidelines and advice from the government on whether any, and what level, of crowds will be allowed we are doing everything we can to bring spectators to BT Murrayfield for Scotland’s home games this season.
And to make access to any tickets as equitable as possible for all our supporters, at the heart of our revised ticketing strategy is a temporary, three-tiered membership to cover the 2020/21 season.
Available to buy from Wednesday 23 September 2020, the three membership entry points are – LOMOND, MACDUI and NEVIS.
Each membership option provides a menu of benefits that, at the lowest end, supporters can subscribe to for free while supporters can also buy from £34/annum for one of the key benefits of entering ticket ballots for all seven international rugby matches at BT Murrayfield, i.e. the 2021 Guinness Six Nations games and 2020 Autumn Nations Cup.

Scotland vs Fiji – 28 November 2020
Georgia vs TBC – 5 December 2020

Nevis, the top tier of the membership, allows access to pre-sale windows of all Scotland Women’s home games. Details for this will follow in due course.
The Nevis tier also allows us to prepare and manage ticket availability at potentially short notice should crowds be allowed into BT Murrayfield. Having a database of fans will also support how we communicate matchday information, vital public health guidance and to support trace and protect measures. Filling a stadium with any sized crowd takes time to manage and we want to enable as many fans as possible back in, in line with Government guidelines. Our approach to the revised membership helps support our facilitation of these arrangements.
Alongside our efforts to keep rugby accessible this season, the new membership structure is also a rallying call to all our fans and wider rugby community globally to ‘Sign Up for Scotland’ and support the game.
The three-tiered membership is designed to offer Scotland fans a way of showing support no matter where they live or how they want to show their love for their nation and its rugby teams.

SUSTAINING THE GAME OF RUGBY IN SCOTLAND
As a governing body Scottish Rugby is responsible for the sport in Scotland with a remit to grow and support the game. To that end, as well as maintaining professional rugby and the men’s and women’s international teams and Scotland 7s over the last five years, Scottish Rugby has reinvested over £14.5m into the club game. However, these levels of investment are under threat as the vast majority of Scottish Rugby income is generated by the international game.
The game’s closure over the last six months has significantly impacted our three main income streams from ticketing, broadcast and sponsorship.
In ordinary times this would normally be a period of significant cash flow via ticketing into Scottish Rugby through the sale of the Scotland Season Pass, bundled ticket packages, match tickets and Supporters Club memberships for the season ahead. This year, with the cancellation of the scheduled 2020 Autumn Tests and the continuing uncertainty around social distancing guidelines also casting doubt on crowd capacities, we have been forced to cancel all our usual ticket and membership products, resulting in none of the essential ticketing revenue during our traditionally busiest selling period.
ON OUR WORK WITH THE GOVERNMENT AND EFFORTS TO BRING CROWDS BACK AT BT MURRAYFIELD
We are in constant dialogue with the Scottish Government and have been since the start of the Covid-19 crisis. They gave us tremendous support as we developed a number of stadium configuration models based on different physical distancing requirements as part of our contingency planning. They gave us the green light for Edinburgh’s derby match against Glasgow Warriors to be the country’s first ‘pilot event’ with a small crowd, and we hope our experience and learnings from this live spectator event helps us to be in a position to invite supporters to watch Scotland play this Autumn.
We know that if permission is granted the numbers will be limited, and it is clear that for the foreseeable future there will be insufficient tickets to fulfil even the pre-existing rights of our stakeholders and core supporter groups.
This has meant having to make some extremely tough decisions to give us the best chance of preserving Scottish Rugby’s ability to support the game going forward. This has included temporarily suspending the rights for major stakeholders such as rugby clubs and debenture holders, and core customer groups, like our Scotland Season Pass holders and Scotland Supporters Club members.
Unable to deliver normal ticketing rights within such a physically distanced stadium, we have no option but to develop a new ticketing strategy to cope with the crisis.
