Stephen Gemmell has been promoted by Scottish Rugby and takes on the newly created role of Technical Director with immediate effect.
Gemmell, who was previously Head of Academy and Performance Programmes, will continue to report to Director of Rugby Scott Johnson and will oversee delivery of key strategic areas for Scottish Rugby’s talent and performance programmes including the BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy, the Women & Girl’s rugby programme and Age-Grade rugby.
He will also work on the implementation of high performance coaching, training and competition programmes for all teams outwith the Scotland national team.
Gemmell will also play a key role in the development of the Scottish Qualified (SQ) programme, building the partnerships created with Stade Nicois, Lille and Stellenbosch, as well as, supporting the Super 6 franchise initiative.
Director of Rugby Scott Johnson said: “As our Performance department grows and develops clearer connections across our different initiatives we believe Stevie’s experience and knowledge can help us to effectively deliver the progress and results we want.
Each of our programmes from the BT Sport Academy, to SQ, to Women & Girls to Age-Grades is gathering momentum and it is vital we remain focused and ensure they all meet their objectives and we continue to evolve them in the coming years, which is something we believe Stevie can make a significant contribution to.”
Stevie Gemmell said: “This a hugely exciting time to be involved in Scottish Rugby and I am looking forward to the new challenges this role will create.
“The breadth of performance programmes now in place means we have a real opportunity to build a sustainable pathway for young and talented players and the wider game in Scotland and I am looking forward to working with all those involved to ensure we deliver the right results to make a real difference.”
