Fosroc Super6 Squads 

Ayrshire Bulls

Success is ingrained at the club that spawned this Super6 franchise, the Ayrshire Bulls. Peter Murchie’s new outfit have a host of exciting players in their ranks, many of whom have been exposed to sustained prosperity both with Ayr and the Scotland Club team.

Of the Millbrae ‘old heads’, Pete McCallum brings with him a real sense of leadership, the back-row having been a key member of Ayr’s successful history. Other Millbrae mainstays include influential stand-off Frazier Climo and fellow half-back David Armstrong, who will be seen as important off-field characters in welcoming the Bulls’ new additions.

In that respect, the club have added fleet-footed Scotland under-20 playmaker Ross Thompson to their ranks. The former Glasgow Hawks pivot has amassed 20 caps at youth international level and his further progression will be keenly watched. Others to look out for include Scottish-qualified scrum-half Aylan Schabort, exciting back Ollie Smith and international prop Gordon Reid, who has been representing Scotland at a second World Cup, in Japan.

Boroughmuir Bears

Born out of the club that produced such rugby luminaries as British & Irish Lions Iain Paxton and Bruce Hay, the Bears are coached by former Scotland centre Graham Shiel and have a squad that boasts a mix of local talent and a few names from further afield.

Amongst the new arrivals at Meggetland are Kenyan international hooker Toby Francombe, Czech stand-off Martin Cimprich and French second-row David Medjebuer. However, some club stalwarts remain an important piece of Shiells’ jigsaw, with Chris Laidlaw sure to play a big part in orchestrating things from fly-half and prolific winger Jordan Edmunds a sure-fire try scorer at Super6 level.

The Boroughmuir Bears squad included some young exciting names as well and will be looking forward to seeing how Scotland under-20 backline starlets Robbie McCallum (centre), Kyle McGhie (scrum-half) and Rufus McLean (full-back) fare against more experienced opposition, whilst 18-year-old flanker Gregor Brown is an age-grade cap and worth keeping an eye on.

Heriot’s Rugby

The Phil Smith era continues to an extent while Heriot’s wait for incoming Head Coach Andy Kelly to finish up in Hong Kong so from a continuity point of view, the Goldenacre side are well placed. Theirs is a settled squad, possessing plenty of experience and no little talent, particularly in the back row where Smith can call upon the redoubtable Jason Hill, Iain Wilson and Jack McLean, as well as Scotland 7s legend Scott Riddell.

Up-and-coming duo Patrick McVeigh and Jack Mann will glean plenty from that quartet, as part of a pack that will look to unleash some exciting backs.

Stuart Edwards will no doubt have a big say in how Heriot’s approach their attack and he is joined by incoming brothers Robbie and Ben Chalmers, as well as a host of lively fledglings that includes Scott King, Harry Paterson, Scott Robeson and Jack Blain, all of whom are still teenagers.

Southern Knights

The iconic Greenyards will be the setting for Southern Knights, whose franchise is packed with Scottish talent of all ages. Head Coach Robert Chrystie has signed up a number of his 2017-18 squad, backing the players at his disposal to take things to the next level. Club stalwarts like Fraser Thomson, Bruce Colvine, Russell Anderson, Iain Moody and Craig Jackson are all aged or approaching 30, although their considerable ability and hunger remains.

New additions for the Knights include Australian prop Connor Young, South African flyer Michael Mvelase-Julyan and Joe Jenkins, a winger with Wales 7s experience of whom good things are expected. In addition, former Melrose favourites Tom Galbraith (stand-off), prop Ewan McQuillin and the versatile Andrew Nagle have returned to to add severe strength in depth to the Borders’ representatives for this inaugural Super6 season.

Stirling County

Head Coach Ben Cairns has spread his recruitment drive far and wide, with the Bridgehaugh squad marrying some very intriguing youngsters with a few worldly-wise heads. Much will be expected in the coming years of 17 year-old stand-off Euan Cunningham, although fellow playmaker Josh Henderson is hardly old at 22. Young scrum-half Kristian Kay will gain plenty of tips from former Edinburgh star Sean Kennedy, who at 28 is amongst the oldest of County’s backline stable.

In the pack, Stirling have plenty more to come, including young prop Murphy Walker giant second-row Cameron Henderson, both of whom have represented Scotland at under-20 level. MacPhail Scholarship recipient Angus Fraser, a hooker, also bolsters Cairns’ options in the forwards.

Experience comes in the form of Australian back-five forward Oliver Bartlett and 30 year-old Dean Taylor-Menzies, a versatile back-row forward from New Zealand who has moved from Western Australia.

WATSONIANS

Under the tutelage of Fergus Pringle and his assistant, Nikki Walker, Watsonians will be hoping several of their talented youngsters can blossom at Super6 level. Of that stable, Scotland under-20 skipper Connor Boyle has already shown considerable promise during his embryonic career, and he is joined by fellow age-grade internationals Roan Frostwick (scrum-half), Sam Grahamslaw (prop), Rory Jackson (hooker), Lomond Macpherson (wing) and second row Jamie Hodgson who, at 21, is a relative veteran with Edinburgh experience already. Centre Matthew Currie, at 18, is another to look out for as the season unfolds.

In balancing the squad, Watsonians have some older heads signed up, including former Currie backs Joe Reynolds and Jamie Forbes, stand-off Lee Millar and seasoned prop Nathan Borel. Kiwi winger Kody McGovern is a new face in a settled squad at Myreside this term, having joined from the Bay of Plenty region in his homeland.
