Scotland’s journey at the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup came to an end at the hands of a physically dominant England in their quarter-final showdown at a soggy Ashton Gate in Bristol. The Scots never stopped battling and, with the clock in the red, this determination was exemplified by a trademark 30m weaving run by Francesca McGhie set up the position on the English try-line which led to Rhona Lloyd bouncing off a series of defenders to score in the game’s last act.
Scotland’s 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup campaign was an encouraging step-forward for the side who failed to progress in the 2021 tournament. From record-breaking wins to a first quarter-final in over two decades, the squad delivered moments that lit up the tournament and inspired a nation. You can take a look back at the highlights.
Increased contract numbers for 2025/26 Women’s Programme
Scottish Rugby is continuing its commitment to the women’s game by confirming its annual contracting model for the 2025/26 season, which sees an increase in contracted players from the previous year and up to 50 having access to high-performance environments.
Speaking on the increased programme, Scottish Rugby CEO, Alex Williamson said: “The performances of Scotland Women at the Women’s Rugby World Cup have undoubtedly given us a strong platform to move into the next phase of our High-Performance programme. Our commitment to the women’s game remains and our focus now moves to qualifying for, and competing in, Rugby World Cup 2029.”
