Marr Rugby have been awarded BT Club of the Month for March for season 2016/17. The club’s 1st XV gained promotion to Scotland’s premier club competition, the BT Premiership, after topping BT National League Division 1 and defeating GHA 39-22 in their final league game to record their 21st consecutive win of the season. The squad have remained undefeated at Fullarton Park since February 2015 and have averaged 41 points scored and 14 conceded across this year’s league campaign, while the club’s 2nd XV have averaged 51 scored and seven points conceded to leave them top of BT West Reserve League Division 1. Marr are committed to improving access to high quality rugby for players and supporters, with over 400 players committed to the club and over 500 spectators regularly turning out for home games. The club have developed their youth section across all age groups while continuing to strengthen their ties with neighbouring Marr College to bring young players through and onto a pathway towards senior rugby. Mini rugby is also thriving with P5 and P6 teams winning their respective age groups at a recent Kelso Mini Rugby Tournament, while Marr’s focus in the coming months will turn to coach development with a UKCC Level 2 course now fully subscribed. Development has been a priority for Marr Rugby over the last couple of seasons with the club, as second round recipients of the Scottish Rugby Club Sustainability Fund, benefiting from a£50,000 cash injection to invest in changing rooms to accommodate a growing number of teams at the club and the development of a women and girls’ section. The club’s discipline over the month of March was also very impressive with several teams adhering to the laws, regulations and Scottish Rugby’s core values, both on and off the field. Marr President, Kevin Quinn, said: “The club is delighted with the national recognition of its work leading to the award of BT Club of the Month for March. “The award comes towards the end of yet another successful year across the club but in particular we are pleased to see the continued progress of the 1st and 2nd XVs.Our 1st XV continues to create club history and the players’ individual and team performances, under the guidance and direction of head coach Craig Redpath, is taking us towards our goal of providing the opportunity for players, coaches and supporters to enjoy participating in and experiencing quality rugby at the highest level possible.”This season, the 1st and 2nd XV players set themselves some targets and these have been achieved. The 2nd XV, under the direction of coaches Keith Dunsmuir and Stephen Galloway, have gained promotion into National Reserve League rugby. After winning the league title, our 1st XV look forward to the test of playing in the top tier of Scottish club rugby.Marr Rugby is in a good place on our ‘Purple and Gold journey’ and the recognition and reward for the hard work and effort that is put in day and daily by players, coaches, officials and all club members and supporters is very much appreciated by all at the club.”In winning the award, Marr will receive a prize to the value of£1000, through a 12-month BT Sport subscription and£200 cash.
