Nations Championship: WHERE HEMISPHERES COLLIDE

17 Nov 2025

A new era of international rugby kicks off in 2026 with the launch of the Nations Championship, a global tournament where Northern and Southern Hemisphere teams go head-to-head across two connected series, culminating in a thrilling Finals Weekend in London. Scotland fans can expect high-stakes matches both at home and abroad, as every game now counts toward one overarching championship.

A New Era Begins for International Rugby

International rugby will enter a groundbreaking new era next year with the introduction of the Nations Championship — the first truly global competition that unites the best of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres in one connected tournament. For Scotland, it means a completely reimagined Test calendar, fresh rivalries, and a route to a blockbuster Finals Weekend in London.

While the traditional Scotland games at Scottish Gas Murrayfield every November will still take place, they will now form the second half of this new worldwide championship. Here’s everything fans need to know about how it works, who Scotland will face, and when tickets will be available.

What Is the Nations Championship?

The Nations Championship is a new global tournament linking what were previously standalone windows — the July Summer Tours and the November Autumn Nations Series — into one competitive structure.

For the first time:

  • Northern Hemisphere teams will compete directly against Southern Hemisphere teams

  • Results in July will directly affect standings in November

  • Both windows feed into one Finals Weekend to crown a global champion

This format ensures every Test match Scotland play in 2026 has meaningful consequences.

How the Tournament Works

Rounds 1–3: Southern Hemisphere Series (July 2026)

Instead of the traditional Summer Tour, Scotland will head south for three fixtures that now count as official championship rounds.

Scotland’s opponents:

  • South Africa

  • Argentina

  • Fiji

These matches make up the first three rounds of the Nations Championship.

Rounds 4–6: Northern Hemisphere Series (November 2026)

The familiar November fixtures at Scottish Gas Murrayfield remain — but now as part of a formal league table.

Scotland will host:

  • New Zealand

  • Australia

  • Japan

These complete Scotland’s six-round campaign.

Finals Weekend – London (27/28/29 November 2026)

The competition concludes with three days of double-headers at Allianz Stadium (formerly Twickenham).

Two league tables — one for each hemisphere — determine the matchups:

  • 6th place vs 6th place

  • 5th place vs 5th place

  • … all the way to 1st place vs 1st place, which decides the Nations Championship winner

Every team plays a Finals match, ensuring the entire tournament builds toward this world-first international showdown.
