Bonus-point win puts Glasgow Warriors four points clear at the top
30 Mar 2026
A scintillating debut from Fergus Watson lit up Scotstoun as Glasgow Warriors powered to a 31–10 victory over Benetton, moving four points clear at the top of the BKT United Rugby Championship table.
The former Scotland U20 winger marked his first professional appearance in style, delivering a try-scoring, Player of the Match performance that had the Scotstoun crowd on their feet. Watson was one of five try scorers on the night, alongside Johnny Matthews, Max Williamson, Seb Stephen and Sam Talakai, as Franco Smith’s men underlined their title credentials.
Despite Glasgow dominating early territory and possession, it was Benetton who struck first. After a prolonged defensive effort from the Warriors, Paolo Odogwu found a gap to score from distance, with Rhyno Smith converting to give the visitors a 7–0 lead.
Backed by a vocal home support, Glasgow responded with growing confidence. The attacking partnership of Adam Hastings and Sione Tuipulotu began to click, and after sustained pressure, it was Matthews who powered over from close range to level the scores. Hastings added the conversion, bringing Scotstoun to life.
A late Benetton penalty edged the visitors ahead at the break, but Glasgow wasted no time reasserting control in the second half. Within minutes of the restart, slick handling released Watson out wide, and the young winger showed pace and composure to finish superbly. Hastings’ touchline conversion put the Warriors firmly in front.
From there, Glasgow took control. The pack and backline combined seamlessly, with Watson again at the heart of the action in the build-up to Williamson’s try, the second-rower crashing over to extend the lead.
Sensing a bonus point, the Scotstoun crowd lifted the team once more. A perfectly executed 50-22 from Ben Afshar set up prime attacking territory, and Seb Stephen duly powered over to secure the fourth try — a crucial score that sealed the bonus point and strengthened Glasgow’s position at the summit.
Glasgow weren’t finished. Continuing to press in the closing stages, the Warriors’ maul proved unstoppable, with Sam Talakai crossing for a deserved score to cap a dominant display. Dan Lancaster’s conversion brought the total to 31 points on an emphatic night for the hosts.
At the final whistle, the Scotstoun faithful rose in appreciation of a performance full of attacking intent, defensive resilience and emerging Scottish talent. Watson fittingly lifted the Scottish-Italian Shield on a memorable debut night.
The result not only maintains Glasgow Warriors’ place at the top of the standings, but opens up a four-point gap — adding further significance ahead of a huge European test, with the Vodacom Bulls set to visit Scotstoun in the Investec Champions Cup Round of 16 next weekend.
