The women’s team faced losses against New Zealand, France and Fiji in pool play, whilst the men were able to pick up a well deserved 14-19 win against Argentina to round off their pool fixtures after tough results from Spain and Fiji. The latter of those fixtures being a tight five-point defeat.
Later, on Sunday, the women faced Japan in the fifth-place play-off losing 31-14 before taking on Canada in the seventh-place play-off and losing 22-14. The men’s side faced similar results on Sunday, with a seven-point loss to New Zealand, which finished 31-24, as well as a 12-24 loss to Spain to place them in eighth.
Great Britain 7’s Director of Rugby Ciaran Beattie said: “The first six tournaments have always been about stretching our players, developing and trying new things in our game on the international stage, we’ve seen that take place this year without a doubt.
“The women’s squad is now competitive in the vast majority of their matches so that’s really off the back of the growth and hard work from everyone that’s working in and pushing that squad. As we go into the World Championships and the performance end of the season, we’ve got real belief that they can leave all of that hard work out on the pitch.
“In terms of the men’s squad, We were inches away in some of the pretty big fixtures, and picked up a win along the way. Performances like that really do leaves us in a good spot, it’ll really help for when we come back in April for Hong Kong.”
