The women’s team recorded losses against New Zealand, France and Japan on the Saturday before being defeated by Fiji and Japan, placing them in eighth.
The men unfortunately followed a similar path, coming up against South Africa, New Zealand and Spain in the pools. After finishing bottom of the pool it was onto the 5th place semi-final, where a well fought and narrow 21-19 loss to France saw them move on to New Zealand in the 7th-place semi-final, fighting hard but struggling to come out on top.
Great Britain Sevens Director of Rugby, Ciaran Beattie, said: “ The girls have taken some real steps forward. We do however, need to start turning that into some wins. We’re starting to really see some belief growing, it’s great to get some real experience into the squad and I hope that that’s something the girls can really build on.
“It’s a really similar story for the men, It was a really tough weekend. We had some real positives though, we were more than competitive against South Africa which is something we haven’t seen this season, and it’s the same with France. Those are two teams that have been at the top of their game. Everyone’s well aware of what we need to work on so we’re just looking forward to getting back and working towards New York at the weekend.”
