Paisley RFC have been proving that Papa John's Tartan Touch really is a game for everyone, with a grandfather and grandson, Alan and Calum, enjoying taking part together.
Alan says, “From sitting with my father, watching Scotland internationals on a grainy black and white TV, to taking my grandchildren to Glasgow Warriors and Scotland matches, rugby has been a bit of a lifelong passion for me.
“I think that has rubbed off on Calum who insisted on joining a rugby club. With Calum and his two sisters now members of PRFC, I have spent a good few hours on the touchline shouting encouragement.
“Tartan Touch has given me the chance to put that ‘expertise’ into practice.
“I last pulled on a pair of rugby boots in earnest almost 60 years ago, so it was going to be a bit of a personal challenge but I was able to build up my pace – ever so slowly. Now it was the youngsters who were encouraging me as a team member and that was a good feeling. The rules of the game may have changed in those 60 years but the team spirit and camaraderie persists. That is what I like about rugby – meeting personal challenges as part of a team.
“To anyone contemplating Tartan Touch, don’t think about it for too long. Whatever age you are – or think you are – get out on that field and enjoy yourself.”
Calum says, “My Pappy is always talking about rugby so I joined PRFC. I love the game, especially Tartan Touch where I can still easily beat Pappy over 50 metres. That’s not going to change any time soon!”
