Scotland 7s have qualified for the Emirates Airline Rugby 7s Cup quarter-finals, after securing two wins in their group today.The side saw off Portugal, 19-14, in front of packed and very noisy Scotstoun Stadium, before edging past Wales, 12-7, in the late afternoon.The day ended with a 5-45 defeated to one of the HSBC Sevens World Series top sides, Fiji, who in turn topped the group.Scotland will now go on to play New Zealand, who topped Pool B, tomorrow at 1.04pm.Head Coach Calum MacRae said: “Fiji are a class outfit and they showed when you control the ball at the restarts, you get a flow of possession and no team can afford to allow Fiji to do that.”They have runners and threats all across the field.Today we have talked about putting in a good showing and strong performances. The boys have showed against decent opposition, in Portugal who have challenged teams all season, and Wales who can beat anyone on their day, that their defence and how they applied themselves has been the actions that have got us through to another Cup competition.”We have a real steely focus about the job in hand tomorrow. This tournament is no different, on the pitch, to any other. We have New Zealand first up and we will approach that in the same way as we have done all year.”The results have spoken for themselves this year, with the consistency we have shown.”Scotland 7s beat Portugal in their opening match of the Emirates Airline Rugby 7s, 19-14, commencing their home HSBC Sevens World Series campaign on a positive note.They then followed this up with a very close victory over Wales, 12-7.The Portugal game started well for Scotland when Colin Gregor ran a fantastic line and had captain Scott Riddell on his shoulder to pick up the offload and run in under the posts, scoring the first try of the match after just one minute.Before the break though, Portugal established the balance of power with tries from Aderito Esteves and David Mateus, both converted by Pedro Leal. Scotland did score before half time, but James Johnstone’s unconverted try kept them just behind their opponents.Both teams took turns to attack in the second period and made good quality plays, but also forced errors. The winning try came with two minutes left on the clock, when Mark Robertson stepped his opposite man and ran in his team’s third try from 50 metres. Gregor added the extras to Scotland’s first and third try.In the dying seconds Estevez found himself with a huge amount of space out wide and the try line in his sights, but a fantastic sweeping tackle from Nayacavou saw the ball go loose and into touch as the hooter screeched.5th Cup quarter for ScotlandAgainst Wales, Johnstone continued to add to his try tally this season, notching his second of the day and  19th overall, after three minutes. This gave Scotland an early lead.Wales responded quickly though, after a meandering run from Dan Fish that confused the Scot’s defence and saw Wales edge in front. Fish added the extras to his own try.In the second half both teams were hindered error after error, but Scotland capitalised on an opportunity to score, when Nayacavou broke and then sent James Fleming in under the posts for the winning try, converted by Gregor.In the last game of the day, Scotland struggled against a class act, and ultimately a lack of possession cost them.Fiji notched up seven tries, as Josaia Raisuqe claimed a hat trick, Semi Kunatani scored a brace and Amenoni Nasilasila and Samisoni Viriviri took one try each.Standing out for the Scots in the match was Fleming who scored his second try of the day.
