Scotland Unis See Off English Colleges

Scottish Universities Rugby came from behind to beat a strong England Colleges under-19 side 34-10 at Lasswade on Friday.Despite playing into a strong wind, Scottish Universities scored the first try through flanker Stephan Dreyer but by persevering with their expansive approach, and only occasionally penetrating the English defence, the numerous wasted efforts allowed England Colleges to take the lead with a converted try after half an hour – adding a penalty two minutes later to go in at the interval 5-10 up. Scottish Universities Rugby came from behind to beat a strong England Colleges under-19 side 34-10 at Lasswade on Friday.Despite playing into a strong wind, Scottish Universities scored the first try through flanker Stephan Dreyer but by persevering with their expansive approach, and only occasionally penetrating the English defence, the numerous wasted efforts allowed England Colleges to take the lead with a converted try after half an hour – adding a penalty two minutes later to go in at the interval 5-10 up.HALF TIME: 5-10With the wind at their backs Scotland fly-half Euan Kelly opted for a much smarter approach using his boot to great effect. Good field position allowed the forwards to dominate their opponents up front getting regular quick ball to a pacy back line before Scotland’s first points of the half came through the boot of Fraser Lyle who cut the deficit to two points.Scotland then proceeded to run in four tries through Rheda Guedroudj who scored out wide following a floated kick from Kelly which caught out a static English defence. The fleet footed James Fleming then ran in the pick of his two tries – his mazy run foxed the defence before he raced to the corner.Man of the match, Dom Dunnett then scored at the posts for Lyle to convert. Fleming was next to cross the whitewash after he pounced on a loose English pass before breaking clear for the try line.Scottish Universities coach, Chris Reekie, said: Having had a tough time in France, the team stepped up against a younger side who posed them problems. “Scoring five tries helps build a platform of confidence, while winning gives them the feel good factor. With Irish Colleges coming on the 13th March (again at Lasswade) we must improve once more, learning to use support players when we get behind defences. I have no doubt we can compete with Irish in the physical confrontations. “Our ability to distribute the ball when in space will define how we can develop further to give Irish Colleges a fantastic contest. Scottish Universities take on Irish Colleges at Lasswade RFC kicking off at 7.30pm on the 13th March. Entry£2 at the gate. Come along and support!
