Scotland met England in their crucial final pool game on Saturday 1 October at Eden Park in Auckland, kick-off 8.30am (UK time) Final score: Scotland 12-16 EnglandRead the match report below, or visit our gallery for action photos from the game.It’s a blustery, dreech evening in Auckland and the teams are lined up in a packed Eden Park. The oldest fixture in the world moves its show to the other side of the world for its most epic encounter to date, the anthems are belted out with gusto – and we’re off!England up too early for the lineout ball but they steal back possession. Knock-on for Scotland in the slippery conditions but turnover ball and Sean Lamont makes the first break.England get the first scrum but infringe and Mike Blair gets the tap and go. Ruraidh Jackson pulls up, looks like a hamstring and he won’t play any further part in the game with only four minutes gone. Parks come on as replacement.Loose ball, Foden and Evans both go for it and Scotland win the ball. Parks kicks, Lamont collects but it pops out of his graps. Great pressure with ball in hand by the Scots.Scrum, front row collapses, England penalised and it’s a penalty for Scotland. Paterson lines up the hit and it sails through – Scotland go ahead 3-0.Fired up again, Scotland pile on the pressure, good numbers, end to end play and it’s going to be a corker. Wilkinson clears to the Scotland 22, lineout for England and knock-ons from both sides – scrum for England but they give away the penalty. Scotland on the ball immediately with the tap and go from Blair, England offside and another penalty, this time it’s Parks. Which side of the bar did it clear? It’s off to the TMO! And it’s over the bar and another three points. Scotland 6-0.Penalty opportunity for Wilkinson but he pulls it wide. England look to be in some disarray.Great kick upfield nailed by Paterson but offside from Jacobsen gives Wilkinson another long-range opportunity however it’s short of the posts.England putting phases together now but minutes later and Scotland (Gray) off their feet, another chance for Wilkinson, much closer to the uprights this time. It’s three misses from three however.Great kick to touch by Parks and after 25 minutes it’s Scotland on the surge.Spilled ball by England after the linout and Scotland go for the drop gola but Parks attempt just falls short of the posts. England may have had more territory but Scotland are ahead on possession.Penalty for coming in at the side(ish) and it’s another opportunity for Wilkinson. This time he gets the three points. 6-3Great pressure out form the line by the Scots – Blair to Parks to Evans – Armitage loups Ansbro into touch and it’s a lineout at the 5m, England push Scotland back to the 22m. Evans and Croft go for the high ball but neither collect and it’s a knock-on.Solid effort from Scotland in the scrum, England penalised for collapsing the front row and the kick goes to touch about 10m from the England line with just seconds to go in this half. Great work from Vernon, Scotland drive towards the line, drop goal from Parks on the whistle and it’s 9-3.Half time: Scotland 9 – 3 EnglandDe Luca is on for injured Evans and it’s game on in the second half. England out firing on all cylinders, make the first break but Armitage put into touch. Tuilagi looking like the go-to man for England.Scrum for Scotland, both sides miss the bind and they go again. England get the nudge but lose the ball forward as they go on the attack. New boots for Ross Ford as it’s another scrum for Scotland. England win the ball back and harry the line. Wilkinson takes his chance in front of the posts for the drop goal but he misses.Scotland on the attack from the halfway line now, Parks to Lamont, held on as he’s brought down by Croft. England go for touch and they’re at Scotland’s 22m.Volleyball-like incercept by Parks, laid off to De Luca and Scotland are back up to the England 22m. Youngs spills the ball, Lamont collects, Blair to Parks to Ford to Paterson, Danielli chases his own kick, the try looks on until De Luca knocks on.Moody comes off for blood injury, replaced by Easter on at 8, Haskell moving to 7.Scrum for Scotland just shy of the England line. Slip from Murray and it’s England’s scrum but Scotland get the penalty eas England collapse the front row. Penalty for Paterson. It’s over. Scotland lead by nine points. 3-12 after 56m.England making changes – Palmer on for Lawes – and Wilkinson sees the chance for a drop goal. He nails it and cuts Scotland’s lead to six points. 6-12.Wilkinson’s follow-up drop goal attempt is chased down by Parks and the action moves upfield again. Great kick from Ashton, however, moves the action deep back into Scotland’s half. The pace kept up by both sides is immense.Good joined-up work from the England pack, Croft snatches the ball, Kellock infringes and it’s another penalty for England. Wilkinson takes it from out wide and nails it. 9-12 (62m)Ross Rennie itching at the touchline to come on and replaces Barclay, while Nathan Hines comes on for Strokosch.Great run up the line by Ansbro, tackled by Tindall who injures himself in the process. The ball is wellied towards the line by Parks, Gray chasing but the potential try rescued by Croft. Tindall continues but looking progressively weary.Jacobsen is replaced by Dickinson and Hartley’s on for Thompson.It’s a penalty for England as Ford is penalised for holding on. Wilkinson going for the sticks to level the game but it comes up short.Penalty for Scotland taken quickly, Blair on the run; Scotland lose the ball and Tuilangi recovers and goes on the run. Wilkinson clears up an ugly spill for England; Ashton to Armitage, tackled by Ansbro. And it’s a penalty to Scotland after solid work by Hines.Cusiter comes on for Blair as we go into the last ten minutes and it’s a Scotland lineout.Tindall has called it a day as he’s replaced by Flood; Corbisiero on for Stevens and Wigglewroth for Youngs minutes later.Ansbro goes for it now, but is bundled aside by Tuilangi. Paterson’s head hits the Eden Park turf with a clatter and it looks scary but he’s back on his feet again. Five minutes to go, Bannahan is on for Wilkinson who’s holding his arm.Parks gives an enormous kick which crosses the line and is rescued by the English defence in a desperate guddle. Back upfield and another handling error from the Scots gives England a penalty, kicked to touch.Under four minutes to go, it’s edge of your seat, stomach-churning pain as England’s perseverance leads to Flood’s overhead pass reaching Ashton and he’s over the line – no space for a flyover this time, however. Flood completes the heartbreak. 12-16.The clock has ticked over to 80m but as Ansbro is bundled into touch England go into the quarter finals and Scotland go home.
