Scotland v Portugal

The neutrals’ favourite at last year’s Rugby World Cup, this is a first visit to Scottish Gas Murrayfield for the team that lit up 2023’s tournament. Having performed admirably against Wales and Australia, Os Lobos (The Wolves) drew with Georgia in one of the most exciting games of the tournament, before going on to cause one of the biggest upsets in the tournament’s history when they beat Fiji 24-23.

Although they have played each other in the international 7s circuit, Scotland and Portugal have only met twice before at this level, in a qualifying game for the 1999 Rugby World Cup, and at the Rugby World Cup in 2007. (This was their first appearance at a Rugby World Cup, captured in an evocative 9-minute documentary on the World Rugby website.) A wonderful opportunity to welcome the latest sensations on the international stage.

Fun fact!
Former Scotland flanker Ian Smith, who won 25 caps between 1992 and 1997, was head coach of Portugal in 2016 for their Nations Cup campaign in 2016.
