Scottish Rugby to put clubs and fans at heart of 2015 Rugby World Cup
Scottish Rugby has today unveiled its far-reaching plan of activities and initiatives designed to engage fans north of the border around the Rugby World Cup 2015. Scottish Rugby has focussed on creating increased awareness of the game and encouraging clubs to recruit players, both new and returning, via a series of club open days around match days featuring the national side. A specially designed online hub has also been developed as a one-stop-shop to enable fans to navigate all the different events and to make the most of match-days and find their nearest clubs. The site, www.thescotlandteam, can be accessed via Scottish Rugby’s current website and is fully mobile and tablet compatible. It features a club finder service, a fully interactive itinerary of this week’s visit by the Webb Ellis Cup, an easy guide to visiting BT Murrayfield for the summer series match vs. Italy or Scotland’s RWC 2015 pool matches being played in Gloucester, Leeds and Newcastle respectively. It also contains a full outline of the Scotland RWC 2015 squad and a live match-day section to follow the all-important scores and results, backed up with a live social media space so fans can follow the conversation about the team. The activity ahead of RWC 2015 kicks off this week as the Webb Ellis Cup visits Scotland for a five-day tour, starting on Thursday 11th June, as part of its global journey to Twickenham for the opening match of the competition on Friday 18th September. While the national team under-go their pre-tournament training camps other initiatives planned include a chance for fans to see them train at BT Murrayfield on Friday 3rd July when the Scotland RWC 2015 shirts will be unveiled and available for fans to buy. Clubs are also being encouraged to get involved in hosting events during the tournament to attract their local communities and provide introductions to the game. Back in May Scottish Rugby invited clubs from across the country to register for the Everyone’s Game” initiative to coordinate activity at grassroots. Up to 70 clubs replied to share their plans to host events and all of them will receive promotional packs from Scottish Rugby to maximise their RWC 2015 activities for game-days. A shortlist of ten was selected to receive additional support from Scottish Rugby and its sponsors, and to receive an exclusive opportunity to meet the team before the opening match on Wednesday 23rd September. From Montrose to Falkirk, Leith to Lismore, clubs across the country will be opening their doors to fans. Work has already started to plan a Scottish ‘fanzone’ in Newcastle for the two vital group matches vs. South Africa and Samoa on 3rd October and 10th of October. The venue for Scotland House” in the city will be confirmed soon giving fans the opportunity to mingle pre and post match before being piped down to St James’ Park nearby. A party atmosphere is also being planned for Scotland’s summer series match vs. Italy at BT Murrayfield on Saturday 29th August. A summer beach party theme is being organised for fans to enjoy the good weather, supported by the BT Scottish Rugby Charity Shield match, which kicks off earlier at the national stadium at 11:45am between Heriot’s and Boroughmuir. Scottish Rugby’s Director of Commercial Operations, Communications and Public Affairs, Dominic McKay said:We have put a lot of time and effort into ensuring we can really maximise this unique opportunity of having a Rugby World Cup in such close proximity to Scotland. We encourage every club to open its doors, extend a warm welcome to the many new players and fans the tournament is bound to inspire. The initiatives we have in place are designed to share the event with fans who are travelling to our matches or watching back home. It promises to be a great celebration of rugby and we hope everyone will get involved and behind the team.”
