RAF take flight to retain Tri-Services title at Murrayfield

After a day of quality rugby played out amongst the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Army on Thursday 28 May at Scottish Gas Murrayfield, it was the RAF who took the eventual spoils with the Scottish Tri-Services title.

With around 1,000 in attendance and weather that played ball, the three squads battled it out across three round robin matches, each of which were played over 20-minute halves at the home of Scottish Rugby.

The RAF and Navy went up against one another in the curtain-raiser, with the former, as defending champions, easing to a five-try win.

It was then the Army’s turn to feature and the turned on the style with an eight-try win over the Navy, who were perhaps feeling the effects of back-to-back games on the international pitch.

It all came down to a decider between the two previous victors in a match that proved fitting as a finale. Leading 12-7 with little time left on the clock, RAF apparently had their title challenge snatched from their grasp with a very late Army score, only for a last-gasp penalty goal helping to swing the pendulum back in their favour.

RAF, with two wins from two, were crowned Scottish Tri-Services champions for the second year in a row, on a day that was marked by a poignant minute’s applause for Scotland great Scott Hastings, who had passed away only four days before.
