That’s encouraging news as EPCR competition begins this weekend and excitement builds to the resumption of the Nations Championship in just over three weeks’ time.

Edinburgh Rugby and Glasgow Warriors are continuing to give their supporters plenty to shout about as they continue their unbeaten starts to the BKT United Rugby Championship season with another weekend of bonus-point victories.

Edinburgh moved to the top of the table with a 29-12 win over Zebre Parma in Italy, making it three wins from three and recording their best start to a season in 11 years. Glasgow Warriors had set the ball rolling on Friday night at Scotstoun, overpowering Connacht 36-19 to maintain their own unbeaten record.

Both sides collected maximum points, with Scotland internationalists making pivotal contributions across the two teams, ahead of November’s Nations Championship matches against New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

Edinburgh set the pace

Sean Everitt’s side have made an impressive start to the campaign, following victories over Ulster in Belfast and the Stormers at Hive Stadium, with a hard-earned bonus-point success in Parma.

Edinburgh dominated possession and territory for long periods, showing both attacking ambition and the resilience required to overcome two yellow cards. When Zebre threatened to make the contest more challenging, the visitors responded with the forward power and composure that have characterised their opening three rounds.

Co-captain Matt Currie provided the first try, powering through two defenders after strong carries from Pierre Schoeman, Ewan Ashman and Magnus Bradbury.

Freddy Douglas then finished a rolling maul shortly before half-time to give Edinburgh a 15-5 advantage. It was the openside’s second try of the URC campaign, having scored a similar close-range gutsy effort against Ulster.

Bradbury was outstanding throughout, repeatedly carrying hard into the heart of the Zebre defence. His influence was rewarded early in the second half when he powered over from close range after an assist from Douglas, with James Grayson converting to extend the lead to 22-5.

Zebre fought back to close the gap to ten points, but Edinburgh kept their composure when the bonus point was on the line. A powerful rolling maul in the final minute carried replacement Tom Currie over for the decisive fourth try, securing a 29-12 victory and sending the capital side to the summit of the URC.

Douglas and Bradbury making their presence felt

Freddy Douglas and Magnus Bradbury were central to Edinburgh’s latest success, underlining the growing influence of their back row.

Douglas combined a try-scoring contribution with the assist for Bradbury’s second-half effort, while his work at the breakdown and defensive energy helped Edinburgh maintain control. His ability to secure turnover ball has always been a trademark of his game, but to see him exert his influence in such key moments of a game is immensely heartening.

Bradbury delivered another outstanding all-round performance, carrying powerfully, working tirelessly around the pitch and helping to establish Edinburgh’s physical dominance. His try was a fitting reward for an afternoon in which he consistently put the opposition under pressure.

The performances are encouraging for Scotland, with both players demonstrating the qualities required to compete at the highest level: work rate, physicality and the ability to strike at a crucial time.

Ashman’s return from injury was another welcome development. The Scotland hooker featured in Parma and came back on to cover the front row after replacement Harri Morris was sent to the sin bin.

With three wins from three, Edinburgh have made a statement in the opening weeks of the season. Maintaining that consistency will be the next challenge, but their start gives supporters every reason to be optimistic.

Glasgow’s pack lays down a marker

Glasgow Warriors produced another powerful display at fortress Scotstoun, using their dominant driving maul to secure a 36-19 victory over Connacht and preserve their unbeaten record.

Gregor Hiddleston, outstanding at hooker including a debut try as Scotland thumped Argentina 47-38 away in Cordoba in the Nations Championship back in July, scored twice from Glasgow’s stunning driving maul accuracy.

The indefatigable Rory Darge and replacement hooker Seb Stephen also crossed from that efficient part of Warriors’ armoury, underlining the strength and precision of Franco Smith’s forward pack.

Darge was influential from the outset, charging down an attempted drop goal and making vital defensive interventions as Connacht looked to establish an early foothold. His try helped turn Glasgow’s territorial pressure into points, while Hiddleston’s second score gave the Warriors a 19-7 half-time lead.

It was also an illustration of the clinical finishing required at international level.  Connacht had a man sin-binned, Glasgow went for the touchline option and delivered!

The backs then showed their quality, with Jamie Dobie collecting a perfectly weighted cross-kick from Dan Lancaster before chipping back inside for Josh McKay to gather and score.

Connacht threatened a comeback in the second half, with Josh Ioane crossing twice to bring the visitors within seven points. Glasgow responded at a crucial moment, Stephen finishing another powerful maul to restore their two-score advantage before Lancaster’s late penalty completed the scoring.

It was a performance built on physicality and teamwork, but also on resilience. Glasgow absorbed the pressure when Connacht came back into the contest and found a way to close out another valuable bonus-point victory.

Dobie milestone adds to Glasgow’s momentum

Jamie Dobie’s contribution was another reminder of the attacking threat and versatility he brings to Glasgow, whether at scrum-half or on the wing.

He had already underlined his finishing prowess with a try brace against Munster in their opening URC win in Cork, the game that marked his 100th appearance for the Warriors.

And then he crossed the whitewash anew in the 33-all draw with Ulster at Scotstoun.

In his last outing in Scotland colours Dobie’s rugby intelligence, pace and handling dexterity were writ large in the two tries he scored in the Nations Championship win against Fiji back in August.

His role in McKay’s try showcased his awareness and execution under pressure.

For Glasgow, the combination of an effective set-piece, defensive intensity and attacking quality has provided an excellent platform for the season. Three rounds in, they remain unbeaten and are firmly among the early pace-setters.

Dalziel makes his mark at Newcastle

Meanwhile, in the English Premiership, Scotland Under-20 stand-off Jake Dalziel marked his competitive début for Newcastle Red Bulls with an encouraging cameo against Exeter Chiefs. The 18-year-old showed his attacking instincts and vision, coming close to creating a try with a well-judged cross-field kick before helping set up Christian Wade to score with a clever show-and-go.

Although Newcastle suffered a 34-28 defeat, Dalziel’s performance offered a glimpse of his potential and provided another positive sign for Scotland’s emerging talent pool.

Club form fuels Scotland optimism

The common thread between Edinburgh and Glasgow is the contribution of Scottish talent to two teams building momentum at the top end of the URC.

Douglas and Bradbury are driving Edinburgh forward, Ashman’s return strengthens their options, and Darge and Dobie continue to demonstrate their inestimable value for Glasgow. Alongside the collective power of the Warriors’ pack and the attacking depth across both squads, those performances offer plenty of positive signs for Scottish rugby.

Edinburgh’s best start in 11 years and Glasgow’s unbeaten run provide a compelling backdrop to the international campaign. Scottish rugby has momentum, its leading players are building consistent form, and supporters have every reason to look forward to seeing them take the next step in a Scotland shirt.
