The Under-20 Six Nations Championship is far more than just a youth version of the senior tournament. It is a high-octane, elite competition where the stars of tomorrow are forged in the heat of Test match intensity. For Scotland, it represents the vital final step in the performance pathway, bridging the gap between academy rugby and the senior international stage.

The tournament follows the same format and schedule as the senior Men’s Six Nations, with matches typically taking place on Friday nights. This ‘Friday Night Lights’ atmosphere has become a staple of the championship, drawing passionate crowds who want an early glimpse of the next generation.

Teams: Scotland, England, France, Ireland, Italy, and Wales.

Format: A round-robin tournament where each team plays the others once.

History: Originally an U21 competition, it shifted to the U20 format in 2008 to align with the World Rugby U20 Championship.

Stakes: Beyond the trophy, teams compete for the Grand Slam (winning all five games) and the Triple Crown (one of the home nations beating the other three).

The Pathway to the Thistle

The U20s is widely regarded as the most accurate predictor of future international success. Over 400 players have graduated from this championship to earn senior caps. In the current Scotland senior squad, almost every player, from Finn Russell and Blair Kinghorn to recent breakthroughs like Freddy Douglas, honed their skills in the U20 Six Nations.

Unique Rules & Innovations

The U20 Championship is often used by World Rugby as a testing ground for new technology and law variations. In recent years, fans have seen:

20-Minute Red Cards: A trial allowing a player sent off for a technical offence to be replaced by a teammate after 20 minutes, ensuring the contest remains 15v15.

Instrumented Mouthguards: Advanced wearable tech that monitors head impacts in real time to prioritise player welfare.

Bonus Point System: Teams earn an extra point for scoring four or more tries, or for losing by seven points or fewer, encouraging attacking, expansive rugby.

The Road Ahead

The 2025 campaign was a pivotal one for Kenny Murray’s side. While the tournament was eventually won by France, Scotland showed flashes of the clinical, expansive rugby they are striving for.

The highlight of the 2025 tournament was a definitive 27–12 victory over Wales at Hive Stadium. Played in front of a record-breaking crowd of over 5,400 fans, the match saw standout performances from the likes of Freddy Douglas and Liam McConnell. Despite tough losses to a powerful England side and a narrow defeat in Paris, the 2025 season successfully integrated a new wave of talent, setting a strong foundation for the 2026 campaign.

The 2026 Championship kicks off in early February. For Scotland, the schedule features two massive home clashes at Hive Stadium and challenging trips to Treviso, Cardiff, and Cork.

Tickets to both Scotland U20 home games are still available.
