EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND - JUNE 04: Rhona Lloyd, Chloe Rollie and Piper Corporal Kym Walker are pictured as Scottish Rugby announce that the match against England in the 2026 Guinness Womens Six Nations will be played at Scottish Gas Murrayfield, on June 04, 2025, in Edinburgh, Scotland. (Photo by Ross Parker / SNS Group) Corporal Kym Walker, a piper with The Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry, will mark a significant milestone this weekend as she becomes the first lone piper to perform at a women’s international rugby match. She will take to the roof at Scottish Gas Murrayfield on Saturday as Scotland Women face the Red Roses, adding a powerful sense of occasion to what promises to be a landmark fixture.
A trained piper within the British Army, Corporal Walker is part of a long-standing military tradition in which music plays a central role in both ceremonial duties and public events. The lone piper is one of the most iconic elements of Scottish rugby matchdays, an instantly recognisable symbol of heritage, pride and anticipation.
While lone pipers have been a familiar and respected feature at men’s internationals for decades, and women have previously performed in that role in the men’s game, this will be the first time the tradition is formally carried out at a women’s match. Her performance represents an important step in ensuring that the tradition and history so closely associated with Scottish rugby are equally reflected on the women’s stage.
The occasion is made even more significant by the scale of the event itself, with a record-breaking crowd expected for a women’s sporting fixture in Scotland. As the sound of the pipes carries across Murrayfield, it will not only signal the start of the match, but also a moment of progress, where tradition and the continued rise of the women’s game come together on one stage.
