Born in Inverness and raised in Northumberland, Mattinson’s rugby journey began at just seven years old when started playing at Tynedale Rugby Club.

From those grassroots beginnings, her talent propelled her onto the global stage. Mattinson earned her first international recognition with England, winning seven caps between 2017 and 2018.

But it was her Scottish heritage that offered her a new chapter in 2022, when she became one of the first players under World Rugby’s updated eligibility rules to switch for the country of her birth. She made her debut for Scotland during the Rugby World Cup 2021 Qualification Tournament against Colombia, a moment she described as “a homecoming to her roots”.

Since then, Mattinson has gone on to represent Scotland at the highest level, featuring twice in the Women’s Rugby World Cup and WXV2 in both 2023 and 2024, as well as three Six Nations campaigns. She has also earned caps on the Sevens stage, representing Scotland in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Over the course of her club career, Caity has represented DMP Sharks, Bristol Bears, Worcester Warriors and most recently Ealing Trailfinders.

Having retired from playing, Mattinson moves on to use her rugby knowledge and skill as the Schools Rugy Manager for Banbury RFC.

Reflecting on her time with Scotland, Mattinson said: “Rugby has always provided me with a sense of belonging, thanks to the people I’ve played alongside. Never more so than with |Scotland, who’s shared love for our wee country and each other has given the best of friendships for life. It could never be overstated just how special that group is.

“I’m incredibly excited to be joining Banbury. The club’s passion to provide as many opportunities as possible to young players and to grow the game is something I’m very proud to be involved with.

“With the Women’s Rugby World Cup going on at the moment, there’s never been a better time to inspire players to pick up a rugby ball and it’s really important we make the most of that opportunity. I can’t wait to get started.”

Reflecting on her time representing Scotland, Bryan Easson said: “I want to take this moment to thank Caity for the dedication she has shown over the last three years with Scotland. She has been central to many of our history-making victories in that time, as well as to our journey at this Women’s Rugby World Cup.

“I have no doubt she will make a tremendous impact in her new role with Banbury RFC. Her passion for and knowledge of the game are infectious, and she has a way of inspiring everyone she meets to fall in love with rugby. On behalf of the entire squad and management team, we wish her every success in this next chapter.”
